Unusual network behaviour in VM of Zorin 18

I was doing some stuff in a VM of Zorin 18 Core (default DE/Appearance) and decided to look at Network settings.

I noticed I had not checkmarked the IPv4 option, use this protocol for resources on the network, so I checkmarked that, went to disable IPv6 as the network icon (ethernet) had disappeared.

It made no difference, but reverting settings seemed to bring the icon back .

I can't help but wonder if the A.I. code used for the Networking element in the Linux kernel version 7.0 is causing issues.

And how do You come to this?

that ipv4 checkbox ("use this connection only for resources on its network") is a split-routing flag. flipping it makes NetworkManager rewrite the profile, so the tray icon often drops for a second then comes back when you undo it.

kernel 7.0 "ai code" is a red herring. nm just reapplied the connection.

if the icon stays gone: nmcli device and nmcli connection show --active. if eth0 still has an address the link is fine and the indicator is just confused.
