[UPDATE] Severe slowdown on AC hp 15s intel i5

HEY @Aravisian I THINK I DID IT! Windows 8.1 runs in virtualbox, it recognized my usb in rufus...its time to flash.... I just need to install guest aditions so it sees my downloads

Well... I basically did a whole in the water...as we say...
*face-palm😭

I used my Microsoft account in the windows 8.1 setup instead of creating a local account so i coundnt get to my user after installing guest additions and now im re installing the vm

Hey @Aravisian It worked I booted through usb to windows installer but in the list I couldn't see my usb (the one I flashed windows 10 with windows to go)
So i tried formatting my external ssd with NTFS and trying to select that after trying again but it was disabled

Specifically it said:
Setup does not support configuration of or installation to disks connected through usb ir IEEE 1394 port

Can you clarify this?
The last I saw, you mentioned using VM, then this message mentions trying to install Windows, but lacking GPT partitioning.

Yea basically I managed to use rufus through a windows 8.1 virtual machine successfully to burn windows 10 with windows to go flag on my usb

But when i booted to windows i couldnt see my usb.. ( I wanted to install windows to the same usb I burned it to)
I also selected GPT

@Aravisian . Would a WinPE or WinRE bootable USB be adequate to do the BIOS update?
I am thinking it could be easier to create instead of full Windows bootable.

@Aravisian @zabadabadoo I Did everything right in the video, I opened rufus, setted up my image format to GPT, Selected windows to go, selected tiny 11 but it refues to go pass Getting ready and it reboots back to zorin

Ok guys I dit it:smiley::smiley:

After bios update it still throttles like crazy on ac and Even tiny 11 had same symptoms. I dont even know what to think anymore

So on the Windows instance, it was slow when connected to A/C power?
It is not on either when on Battery?

Does your BIOS settings page have any controls for Clocking?
There may be conflicting clocking values.

@Aravisian
When on battery it never slows down

That is very weird.

Usually, it is the other way around.
And, it is doing it on Windows OS or GnuLinux, so it is Operating System independent.

What we do know from this - was that you were jumping througha lot of hoops trying to apply the HP BIOS Update patch - which is supposed to also be OS independent as it is the BIOS Operating System...
Was that successfully applied?

I thought this meant so, earlier...

@Aravisian Yes I did it sucessfully...I created a windows 8.1 vm running rufus with my extenrnal ssd...I runned tiny 11 from my extenranl ssd, installed the update and it suceeded...also at bios update the fans where crazy...I mean it...
I found a ubuntu forum that said this...

So for some reason on my laptop I suffer from severe throttling issues when bdprochot is enabled, putting my cpu at a measly 400 MHz from it's 2.8 cap according to cpufreq-info and 380 mhz from 2.6 according to windows task manager.

3 Resolve problem CPU lock in Ubuntu
I had the same problem with CPU stuck on 0.79 GHz and all you need to do is..
1) Disable bd prochot on Ubuntu 20.04
sudo apt-get install msrtool
sudo modprobe msr
sudo wrmsr 0x1FC 2
2) Check your actual CPU freq in realtime:
sudo apt install i7z
sudo i7z
3) Use stress to simulate full CPU usage
sudo apt install stress
stress -c 8

Did you try it with another power supply?

Not yet

Also the solution I found did nothing.. Basically the EC kept it to 400mhz because it thought it was unsafe for no reason

Even after doing a
sudo apt-get install msrtool

sudo modprobe msr

sudo wrmsr 0x1FC 2

It kept doing its own thing even after running it in a while loop or even making a startup service as they said in the post

Basically at about 20-26% it didn't slowdown but soon it did again while charging... As soon as it reaches 94% it stops throttling

Did you ever try a different battery?

EDIT: Will the laptop run with battery removed? to see effect.

Can I just say @anglaro your levels of patience exceed mine, for I would have given up by now. The last time I tried to run a BIOS update EXE, it ruined my OS, and I gave up after that, cause DANGER in bold took over my mind, after seeing what it did to my Linux installation.

I accepted the fact, I will never update my computer's BIOS, unless I am on Windows. Truth is, I don't even remember why I was trying to update my BIOS, I was having no issues, other then the ones I created, by being stupid.

I since learned what @Aravisian said was true. All the marketshare is in Windows, they force you to be on Windows to BIOS update. We have no anti monopoly laws enforced in our country, so thats how they get away with anti-consumer activities.

@zabadabadoo No I havent...tomorrow I will call hp support
Also after seeing a video

It seems that to remove the battery, a technician needs to unscrew the laptop
I will leave that to the technitian for later

Oh. From images I searched, I thought was a simple plug in battery that could be replaced without laptop case disassembly. That is why I suggested doing a quick swap with your colleagues same laptop battery.
