Updating package list freezes and fails on Zorin 15.3 Core

As of 2021.06.24 22:20:00 (GMT+7) I run into a problem with actions that invoke downloading package lists:

  • running update-manager (failed with "check your internet connection" message)
  • opening software-properties-gtk (always freezes at start for few seconds then resumes normally)
  • searching for packages in gnome-software (it only shows packages already in the cache)
  • executing sudo apt update (with terminal output below)

apt update output
$ sudo apt update                                                                               1 ↵

I am connected to the internet just fine and I just want to make sure that this problem is actually just some servers having down time and not my Zorin breaking.

On a side note, I have this one package source that I'm not sure is one of the defaults or I may have added some time ago:

http://ppa.launchpad.net/linuxuprising/apps/ubuntu bionic main

Can anyone tell me if this source is from out of the box or not?

Can you show me the output of this command in terminal?

cat /etc/apt/sources.list

Sure

I just compared it with my installation of Zorin 15.3.
It looks the same.

On the contrary,

ppa.launchpad.net/linuxuprising/apps/ubuntu bionic main

I did not see this on my plain vanilla 15.3.
It looks like you have added it yourself.

Thanks. That's one problem down.

May I ask of you one thing?
Can you go to https://ubuntu.com and see if the page loads?

No problem to connect this page on both Firefox and MS Edge. I cleared the cache to make it for sure.

Something is wrong. I think that one torrent i was downloading to from fosstorrents[dot]com is a malware. I'll have to fix this mess somehow...

Which browser are you using?
Do you have a second browser to test?

My main browser is Firefox but I also install a second one just in case Firefox fails to connect.

I am also surprised to hear that the malware is hosted at https://fosstorrents.com/

I have Chromium and it also fails to load the website.

I just tried using a proxy and ubuntu.com page loads normally.

Yeah, I know, right? for a website that has "foss" in its URL...

The torrent was extremely suspicious. The progress bar (and MB downloaded number) actually went back and forth unlike how it goes normally.

If that were the case, you might want to notify the support/help of this site.

Even there was no malicious intent, people could make a mistake and upload a broken files.

Once my friend gave me his own Ubuntu based distribution which corrupted the BIOS of my system. It was an earnest mistake. (Thanks to the dual-bios on Gigabyte m/b, I was saved from a disaster).

Ok I just did. In the meanwhile I have to look up solutions for this.

To anyone reading this, I'm still open to suggestions. Please help!

It sounds like the internet connection was interrupted and caused some broken packages.
This page might help.

Unfortunately it doesn't work. the terminal output is the same.

I am afraid I cannot help you any further from this point.
I hope someone who is more knowledgable than myself would join this thread to help you.

Are you accessing the forum and sending these replies from the same afflicted machine as the terminal output from above?

Are other websites also affected?
Have you rebooted the machine after noticing the fault?
Have you checked your firewall settings?

Yes
Yes, ppa.launchpad.net and archive.ubuntu.com
Yes, and nothing changed after rebooting
Yes, Firewall is off

To access internet i use my phone's tethering, and i just found out that my phone can't access those URLs too. My father's phone has the same ISP as mine but it can access those URLs. I figure that maybe it's my phone's DNS messing it up so i turned it off, but nothing changed.

I, for one, am at a loss. I bet it is something pretty simple, really... But this is an unheard of symptom. It is as if your Ubuntu-based distro has been isolated away from Ubuntu resources. That is troubling.

And just when I think it may start making sense, the next clue you post changes it back to not making any sense.

The next test I would perform would be to tether your computer to the net from your fathers phone, instead of yours. If everything then works, you at least have isolated it to your phone. The risk may be in exposing your father to anything that may have harmed your phone or computer...
But a phone is pretty easy to Factory Reset.

If it is not your phone, but is the computer, I would Bite The Bullet and start packing up your files for a total Wipe and Reload of the OS. Better safe, than sorry.

You're right. I tethered my Zorin to my father's phone and everything went back to normal. So it's actually my phone that can't access ubuntu.com domain. Fortunately, my father's phone is not affected after I'm done testing it.

I don't know where to go from here. the only leads i got from the browsers on my phone are error messages, one of either:

  • ERR_TIMED_OUT,
  • DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN, or
  • the URL is not recognised at all

I guess I'll have to take this to android forums now that it's clear that it's not a Zorin/Ubuntu problem.

Thanks for helping nonetheless.

Maybe this guide can help in the meantime. You will need to scroll a good ways down to Android (Or just alt+f and then search android and then click 6 or so times).

Thanks, but it didn't help, BUT i did manage to solve it.

I did two things, one of or maybe both of them may be the correct one(s):

  • clear the cache of all browsers, DNS, and VPN apps in your phone through the Installed Apps Manager

  • and/or go Airplane mode for quite a while to get a new IP, i recommend about 30 minutes for good measure

Anyway, even though this is not a Zorin problem, I still think this solution could be useful for someone.

Thank you to all who tried to help
