There are no topics on the upgrade utility so it must just be me. I purchased version 17 Pro. I have the install key. When I start the upgrade tool (System Tools -> Upgrade Zorin OS), a window appears that says 'Looking for upgrades'. A spinning icon appears in the window. It remains like this forever. I also tried it earlier this week with the same result. Can this be because I am outside the US borders? I'm currently on 16.3.
I also tried to download it directly from the Zorin website, but it wants me to buy it again or else re-send the key. I cannot find a way to use my key to download it.
Thank-you. I believe that I followed all of the instructions. I got to the step where the instructions said to use the upgrade app (System Tools -> Upgrade ZorinOS). This app stated that it was looking for upgrades. It never stopped looking. I had to kill it. I'm sure that it is frustrating having to deal with clients having problems often caused by their own errors. I did this type of thing once upon a time. I'm 75 now and not quite as sharp as I once was. Still, I think I followed the instructions.
Please note that the help instructions you reference in your note only addresses version 16. I purchased 17 Pro and I have the support key. I'm reported erroneously by your system to be using 16.3 core, but I also bought 15 Pro and 16 Pro.
I do not understand this. Are you referring to Neofetch output?
The Zorin Forum does not report users Zorin OS edition nor have any means to do so and the Zorin OS system will not relay if on Pro, Lite or core. It lists only the lsb-release information as Zorin OS.
My apologies. I must have been tired while I was doing this. The screen I referred to is a help page. Therefore, it is just an example. I have so many zorin tabs open now trying to get everything figured out. Please don't think that I am criticizing the effort to get this release into the field. I spent my life getting releases completed and distributed. I know very well that there are always glitches. I'm confident I will eventually succeed.
BTW, I believe I know what the problem is with the 'System Tools -> Upgrade ZorinOS' tool. After about 7 attempts to use it, it has now succeeded in finding the available updates, asked me for the key, then said it was checking system requirements. Unfortunately, this is where it stayed until it finally said that it had failed. I tried again and I again made it to the page that said it failed. I clicked the the 'Send a report and close' button. This is very much like the behavior of an overwhelmed server. Therefore, I will try again every so often over the next few weeks. I imagine that the demands on the server will decrease.
The image below is part of the help page that I was referring to. I must have come back to the page later and forgotten it was a help page.
I really do agree on this. Most of the Upgrader errors I have seen reported on the forum also look like overwhelmed server problems.
Unable to find address
Unable to verify GPG key
Unable to download packages
Given the very vocal push for the release of the Zorin Upgrader for moving to 17, it seems highly likely that the servers are excreting steam out of their exhaust ports.
I bet the gamers can attest that at the release of a new game, the downloads are slow or go sideways.
I'm not sure if it is appropriate to continue with this thread. I have gotten past the original error described in the title. The upgrade has failed with errors related to vivaldi browser ... twice. In fact, the everyday updates that I do everyday always fail on the vivaldi elements. Plus, there are other errors. Here is the output of the upgrade attempt:

It appears that many of the posters who ran into issues with the upgrader also had Vivaldi and / or Brave browsers.
Let's try removing Vivaldi and its repository (If you are willing) and see if that helps resolve the upgrader.
sudo apt remove --purge vivaldi-stable
Remove repo:
Elevate to root
sudo -i
Launch file manager
nautilus
Navigate to the repository
In the left pane, click "Other locations", in the right pane, click "Computer." Now, double click on etc, then double click on apt and on sources.list.d
Right click on vivaldi.list and vivaldi.list.save and select Delete respectively.
I only used vivaldi browser for a short while when I first switched to Linux. Curiously, although I was able to delete vivaldi.list.save, I did not find vivaldi.list. That may be why I got the following errors.
** (org.gnome.Nautilus:100979): WARNING **: 17:05:24.591: Unable to get contents of the bookmarks file: Error opening file /root/.gtk-bookmarks: No such file or directory
** (org.gnome.Nautilus:100979): WARNING **: 17:05:24.591: Unable to get contents of the bookmarks file: Error opening file /root/.gtk-bookmarks: No such file or directory

Nautilus-Share-Message: 17:06:02.165: Called "net usershare info" but it failed: Failed to execute child process “net” (No such file or directory)
Your Bookmarks and other personalized configurations are stored in /home/&USER (your Home directory) since they are user specific.
When you elevate to root with the file manager, you are leaving the Home Directory and opening Nautilus in Root - a place where the bookmarks and configurations are not stored. So, it cannot find them. Those are just a warning from nautilus that can be ignored since it is expected that it cannot find the bookmarks in Root instead of home.
In the listing of the directory contents, the vivaldi.list file does show, so I can only suggest double checking for it.
I moved forward. The install took about 30 mins up to the 'Cleaning up' step. This step ran for over 2 hours. I expected this step to be very quick. It finally quit and reported 'a few minor errors'. It does seem that stuff is missing such as Firefox (which I have already re-installed). None of my homemade python apps, such as my password manager, are working. I can probably figure this out myself. (I spoke too soon. only 2 of my 5 homemade apps that I use all of the time are not running. The other 3 are.) Later the same day, I have resolved the issues with my Python apps by installing PyClip. It was missing in action.
Note that I cannot restart nor shutdown. The system just keeps running. Eventually, I will have to crash the system, I think.
Note that some system functions are extremely slow. It takes over a minute for the Settings app to start up and another full minute for it to shutdown. It takes several minutes for its data displays to update. If left alone, I eventually am told that it isn't responding. I can kill it using the provided 'Force Quit' button.
Please have a look at the result presented at the end of the install:

A lot has happened since I made the last edits to the above post a short while ago. Let me cut to the chase and just say that I now have the machine running at normal speed, my python apps are running, the Settings app is running normally, I have restarted the system successfully. This restart solved a lot once I was able to get the system to do it.
I am still encountering issues which I will try to resolve before I post anything more. My biggest headache right now is that the newly installed Firefox does not know anything about the previous installation ... no profile. I have tried various ways to import this from the old install without success. However, I find that the old Firefox is still there. So I am just using it instead of the new one. The firefox icon on the taskbar was gone, but I found 2 entries for Firefox in the Z menu ... one being the old one which remembers everything ... very important. I think I was forced to install Firefox using pip which may explain how I have two installs.
Thanks for all of your quick support. I really appreciate it.
Thanks. I will read that. However, I believe that my old profile must still be there. I have to instances of Firefox now. If I start the old one, it remembers everything. If I start the newly installed one, it does not remember everything. I have looked at the profiles for Firefox in /home/jim/.mozilla/firefox and I find:
phh3pgtj.default-release
6qxxtzjw.default-release-1
Both instances give the same version number, but the old one is snap and the new one is flatpack. Is there any reason why I should favor the flatpack version over the snap version? If not, I will just eliminate the flatpack install and done. Otherwise, I will try renaming the profile files. Or I might try replacing the contents of the -release-1 file with those of the -release file. It might take a bit of fiddling.
