Url's not opening from programs in Zorin lite

I noticed that internet url's won't open my browser (Firefox) when clicked in the document viewer that came with Zorin (16 light). Clicked Url's also wont open from other programs (such as a recently installed note taking app). I checked Zorin System settings and it says Firefox is the default.

I think that document viewer which came with Zorin is called "evince" (but I'm not 100% sure of the name...)

Anyone have an idea how I can get it and the other apps so the url's can open Firefox from them?

I have a similar problem that I've only noticed (so far anyway) in Calibre. Its links to its own site to update don't work. I'm not sure I've actually ever clicked any other URL external to a browser, so it may or may not be global for me as well.

I had a similar problem. The problem is with the version of Firefox included with Zorin 17 initially. I tried to uninstall Firefox and to install the apt version, but it simply reinstalled the original. I then installed Chromium browser and set it as default browser. Now all links (http) open in Chromium, but I still use Firefox for browsing internet. Not perfect but a working fix.

@Frog first, ditch Document Viewer and replace it with Okular, APT version. It is far superior to Document Viewer. You can even use it to view Presentations.

@ian4238 I would advise you remove Firefox and download the tarball of Firefox ESR and install that. I included how to do this in a video I made about the Beta version of Zorin 17 here. (The same method can be used for TOR browser).

With Zorin 17 came Firefox as a Flatpak. With Zorin 17.2 Firefox comes again as APT because the Zorin Crew has added the Mozilla-own Repo to Zorin. So, you can now install Firefox as .deb directliy from Mozilla. If that shouldn't be added, you can add the Repo manually.

Thanks I installed it and will give it a try ..... kinda looking for something that is easy to use with out all the bells a whistles as I only use a PDF apt for viewing PDF files .... but we'll see how Okular APT works .....

I tried setting Chrome as my default (I also tried Brave) - but links from pdfs or note taking app still wouldn't do anything.... So I'm guessing re-installing Firefox wont do much either...

Does anybody else have any ideas?

Basically, I just want to be able to open pages in my default browser from url links in my apps. Does anyone have an idea of what might not be set up right - or what might be blocking it?

Others have asked you if your browser/s are installed as Flatpak or Snap rather than apt. Both Flatpak and Snap installations are self contained whereas a apt edition of a browser will have better integration with the rest of your system.

So the question remains: Are your browsers (Chrome, Brave, Firefox) installed as Flatpak's or Snap's.

This thread may aid your understanding. [Z17 BETA/UBUNTU 22] How to get the native Firefox instead of flatpak/snap

Note: Although early versions of Z17 cane with Firefox as Flatpak, I understand Z17.2 now provides Firefox as an apt.

I'm sorry, I just reread all the posts. No one is asking me if [my] browser/s are installed as Flatpak or Snap rather than apt. Just that that is an issue on some versions of Zorin 17 - and that that was my problem and that I should ditch my viewer. But no questions. Just assertions.

Searching the internet I found out how to check.

I'm using Zorin 16 and my firefox is apt. (that is, if I checked correctly) - I put in 'apt list firefox' and it came up.

When You go in the Firefox Settings. And there to the General Tab (the first one). There is at the top directly the Option to set Firefox as the Standard-Browser (Please don't be irritated by the Language, my System is in german):

Did you have clicked on it?

My bad and I am sorry. I misread your first post re Z16 and got carried away with posts mentioning Z17.
Z16 came with Firefox as an apt as standard. Glad to hear your issue is now fixed using the Default Browser setting in Firefox.
