So yesterday, my laptop’s usbs all stopped working, and I then realised I can’t reboot. I can only shut down holding the power button.
I can’t use a mouse or else, and can’t use a usb stick, which means no usb boot.
I reinstalled grub, updated all my drivers and got the message (while the update was taking place) “usb device enumeration failed” for all my ports.
Also, it’s a dual boot system with windows 11, and the same issue happen there too.
Here are my specs:
Framework 13"
12th Gen Intel(R) Core™ i7-1280P 1.80 GHz
32 Go of Ram
Zorin OS
In addition to what Forpli said.
If grub menu is OK. Choose "Additional Options for Zorin" and try booting from a previous kernel generic version listed there.
If fast startup in Windows at power options is enabled, it prevents Windows from shutting down completely. As a result, it is possible that some drivers in Linux are not loaded correctly. It is therefore important that it is switched off.
If this is a desktop PC, please unplug it from the wall. Remove, then reset the CMOS battery.
Then test by plugging back in and powering on to see if the USB ports work.
If it is a notebook computer ( I Suspect it is because the O.P. said it is a Framework 13 inch), unplug the power supply and remove the battery case.
If you have access to easily remove and reset the CMOS, great, but if not, with the battery removed, hold down the power button on the notebook for a minimum of thirty seconds (to drain capacitors) and then power it all back up and test.
Front USB ports on the Framework 13 have been reported to stop working in both Windows 11 and Linux. A user mentioned that the left and right front ports (those closest to the trackpad) no longer work, but the modules function correctly when moved to the rear USB ports. This issue was observed in both Windows and Linux, indicating it is unlikely to be an OS-specific problem.
Another user experienced a similar issue with the right-hand side USB C port not charging, and neither the front nor rear right ports worked for charging or data. They resolved the issue by removing all charging cables, going into the BIOS, and selecting the battery disconnect option. After reconnecting the charger, the ports started working again.
In another case, a user reported that USB and Bluetooth stopped working in Arch Linux after leaving the system unused and unplugged for a week. However, the same hardware worked fine in Windows 11. The issue was related to the USB subsystem, with voluminous errors in the dmesg output indicating repeated USB resets.
The user tried several troubleshooting steps, including disconnecting the battery in the BIOS and rebuilding the initrd without Bluetooth modules, but these did not resolve the issue. The problem was found to be specific to Arch Linux and possibly related to the MediaTek MT7922 Bluetooth controller and the USB subsystem.
So I did unplug the battery and pressed the power button several times and no luck... still not working. Also now, it struggles to start. Here's what I get during failed boots.
Did You contacted the Framework support and explained Your Issue? As far as I understand, these Framework Laptops are modular; so maybe You could get a new USB Modul because Your's is broken?
