Using email client in zorin

Has anyone had any luck using an email client in Zorin? I can't even get Thunderbird to send or receive anything.

What Version of Thunderbird do You have installed? Flatpak, Snap or the Version from the Thunderbird Website? Oh, and are You using Zorin 17 or 18?

I use the Flatpak version of Thunderbird and have no problems with it—it runs smoothly.

How did you install Thunderbird? Are you using the .deb, flatpak, or snap version?

According to my installed apps page it's flathub. I'm pretty new to Zorin - tried it a couple of years ago on an older compute (16 version). When the hard drive died and we dumped the old machine I didn't get back until now with the end of Windows 10. Everything seemed to install fine, but I can't send or receive anything. I'm using my outlook.com emai if that helps any.

I can't remember the exact process or steps but when you set up your outlook.com email account in thundbird it should have tried to start a sync process. You should have been prompted through your msn or outlook.com account to allow access to your email, calendar, contacts, etc. Do you recall getting anything like that?

Nope. The email account showed up on the page as being there, but none of my subfolders are there and nothing is showing in junk or deleted so it never synced with my account. Does it matter that I followed the recommended IMAP set up.

I thought I remembered that Outlook was an email system that was more complex than others to set up in TB. I use proton and att myself as the underlying systems.

A quick brave search yielded the following: Hope this helps.

Setting up Thunderbird on Linux to work with an Outlook email account can be challenging due to changes in Microsoft's authentication methods, but it is achievable with the correct configuration. The primary difficulty arises from Microsoft's shift to OAuth2 authentication, which requires specific server settings and user verification.

  • To resolve this, the IMAP server name must be set to 'outlook.office365.com', connection security should be 'SSL/TLS', and the authentication method must be 'OAuth2'.*
  • For the outgoing (SMTP) server, 'Microsoft - smtp.office365.com' should be used with port 587 and STARTTLS-OAuth2.*

If Thunderbird fails to connect, it may be necessary to remove the existing Outlook account and reconfigure it using these settings, which will prompt Microsoft to verify the connection via the user's Outlook password and consent to allow Thunderbird access.

  • Some users have reported success by ensuring JavaScript is enabled in Thunderbird, as this is required for the new OAuth2 settings to be adopted by the Outlook server.*
  • Additionally, using the latest version of Thunderbird, such as v138, which can be downloaded as a self-contained archive from the official website, may help avoid compatibility issues.*

For flatpaks, you also need to install the flatseal app and with flatseal grant the necessary permissions for accessing users files/system files for thunderbird at tab filesystem.

If you prefer native .deb packages (they need no permissions as they are not sandboxed of the system), remove the installed flatpak and install the .deb version of thunderbird:

Zorin 17:

sudo apt install thunderbird

Zorin 18:
Here it is more complicated because you would have to add the MozillaTeam PPA, otherwise you get the snap version of thunderbird:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/ppa -y
sudo apt update
sudo apt install thunderbird

The ESR version of Thunderbird in snap also works well:
sudo snap install thunderbird --channel=esr/stable

Ran into snag. Haven't been around Linux for a few years so gotten rusty. Can't seem to log in as administrator to continue with these commands. I put in my log in password hit enter continue adding the commands you gave me but nothing happens. Just sits there till terminal times out.I know I'm doing something wrong, or missing a step here.

Please enter only one line at a time, then press the Enter key.
Then comes the next line.

Tried that one but got a no recognition on the last part ' --channel-esr/stable'

Yep took it a line at a time then enter. No response to any line. Is that normal? Even at the end no response.

Is your user authorized to act as an administrator? Does it always work otherwise? You should actually see a terminal output. Are you connected to the Internet?

My wifi connection is fine otherwise I wouldn't be getting your messages. Getting administrator privilege may be where I'm messing up. What command should I be using. Maybe I'm not requesting it correctly.

Usually the password is your normal user password but your user must be in the sudo group.

su is the command to get root privileges

Well I got really lucky and stumbled on a feature I'm guessing is pretty new since nobody has mentioned it. Zorin 18 has a feature that lets you save the log in info for microsoft accounts. I entered it there, downloaded Evolution again (what I started out with until I realized it wasn't doing anything), and now it works like a charm.

Yet, it works well with my home script (only a sequence of commands) for my professional installations.

Again another solution: download from Mozilla FTP and use it in portable mode: ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases

There are also other e-mail clients on GNU/Linux...
