Virtual Box Questions about Completeley Remove and Version

Hello everyone,
I am a new to using Zorin 17.1 Core and have a few questions about Virtual Box.

  1. How do I remove VirtualBox completely with all settings? In the software menu probably only the program is deleted. In the Software Package Manager I can find some entries, should I delete the three marked in green (see photo)? Afterwords I want to install it new.

  1. Does it make sense to install the latest VirtualBox 7.0.18 from Oracle instead of the VirtualBox 6.1 available in the Gnome Store, I think it is not tested until now?
(Zorin 17.1, for example, installs the additional package VNC when installing VirtualBox 6.1 via the Gnome Store, which Oracle does not install and does not recommend. So maybe its better to install VirtualBox 6.1 from Oracles Website?

The Synaptic package manager should highlight all the packages that are dependencies of the one you are trying to remove. However, I'm not sure if this will remove the settings as well. But on the terminal you can run this command:

sudo apt purge virtualbox

This should take care of removing everything.

As a general rule of thumb, stick to the software that is available on the official repositories. One of the reasons for this is as you said: is not tested and may not be compatible with the rest of the system. This is not really bad by itself but it becomes impossible to troubleshoot issues, and there are no guarantees that it will work well, if at all. Also, it won't receive automatic updates and security patches from your package manager.

There are times where this is the only option however. For example, when the package that you need is not on the official repositories or is not at the version that you need it to be. Please note that newer does not mean better and it's fine to run on a well tested version, even if it lags behind on the latest one available.

When you ran the installed version did it ever come up with a message, a newer version is available?
