VLC not playing .mov file

Hi. Hope everyone is doing well. I also hope someone can offer a suggestion to a problem I'm having with VLC Media Player as it will not play .mov files. Any ideas, suggestions or questions would be appreciated.

I would advise SMPlayer over VLC.

Is VLC installed as Flatpak or .deb Version? Also I would relate to this:

Thank you all for the quick responses & help. So, after a bit more checking it appears there might be some compatibility issue between the mov files I was sent and the version of VLC installed in Zorin. The mov files will open in VLC but will not play, just hangs on a single frame.

However, they do play in SMPlayer in Zorin. They also play in VLC and Media Player on a Windows 11 laptop. They also play on an old ipad, so I've got options, problem solved!

I did find something while searching that gave a terminal command to add Codecs but I don't think it worked. I think it hung up & I couldn't tell if it finished, moved on to something else, now I can't find it again. If you know how to install the Codecs and can share that process I would appreciate it. Thanks again.

Thank you, yes, this link did work with VLC on this Zorin laptop and that's what prompted me to try other avenues. So, it's just my mov files with VLC on this Zorin laptop that apparently has a problem! Thanks again.

Play the mov file again and use Ctrl+M to open the VLC's message window, check if there are any errors.

Hello, unfortunately most of the Linux video players have problem with something. Especially when it comes to Apple Quicktime format.

It's possible that VLC is installed via flatpak or snap method and they might not have sufficient access to codecs etc. Can you check which type is installed and if it' not APT, remove the current vlc and install the APT one.

I also prefer SMPlayer but I also had many problems with it about opening mov files and created this issue:

First, open Gnome Software. Scroll down to the End and there is a Button called ''Codecs''. Click on it and You get an Overview with Codec Packages. Install them all.

Then go in the Terminal. When VLC is installed as .deb/APt Version, You don't need to install it with. I will mention it only for Completion:

sudo apt install vlc ffmpeg ubuntu-restricted-extras

The last Package is a Bundle which includes Codecs and Microsoft Fonts. Because of the Fonts, You will get a Licence Agreement Screen. there navigate with the TAB Key to ''Ok'' and press Enter.

So I've installed codecs, tried terminal cmd suggested by Ponce-De-Leon and VLC still fails to run the mov files I've been trying to run. And when checked for errors with Ctl+M, gives errors indicating maybe the "computer is too slow?" (photo attached). However, it will run the Sample MOV file suggested by Noupon w/no errors!

So, go figure! I'm done with it & moving on. Thanks to all for the help!

Original install was Flaphub, over looked that both you & sglbl mentioned APT! So, uninstalled Flathub and installed APT, didn't help! Thanks again to all for the help.

Try SM Player instead, its far better then VLC & its traffic cone.
