You may want to try a different Desktop Environment to the default one, such as Cinnamon, MATE, LXQt, xfce etc. Note that you won’t be able to access it until after you have installed, updated and rebooted your machine. To choose the new one you have to click on the cog in the password box to choose the DE you want to give a try:
