Prtty much as title suggests, the update has been going on ten hours or so, protonmail has gone blank

Please reboot machine and start Software Updater then click on Stop. Next click on Settings button. Go to first tab to see which server is shown for your software updates. If it is Custom or your country's locale server, change this to Main Server and try updating again. In respect of Proton Mail, have you installed Proton Bridge? This is necessary for GNU/Linux users but not for Windows and Mac users and it is not available to those on the free version of Proton Mail.
When you canged the Server like @swarfendor437 described and the Problem still exists, could You please run the Update in the Terminal?
