What are containers?

I recently came across a post on X that said it is important to keep containers on Linux up to date. What are containers? I am familiar with packages are they the same thing?

I looked this up for you on Google to help explain it:

Containers are some sort of virtual machines for apps (i think)

I would say that containers are aimed more at the Enterprise market.

For home users, you could argue that App Images are similar to/same as containers, in that they are isolated from the OS.

Back to containers. Like all software they also carry security risks:

While others have given OP several answers, I'll still provide my side.

LXC Containers, also known as linux containers are basically VMs but without any user interface and is much more lightweight.

Containers are often used to run services like Home Assistant.
For the average user, containers isn't worth learning/using.
