This question is for those who do light editing on images with simple programs. I am one of them, but I often miss some basic functions, even in good programs like kolourpaint. So I want to implement them.

I'm not missing anything in particular. For very simple drawing their is Inkscape for Vector Graphics. One independent app that I particularly like is 'My Paint' - this has a 'mirror' tool so that anything you draw on one side of the divide is mirrored precisely on the other side. Which allowed me to create this:
