Yes. Exactly. Thank you for sharing here. Hmm. The two bars with three dots icon still hasn't come back. Been a few days. I wonder if the Zorin Group did something that caused this issue to emerge in 17.3. This was never an issue in versions 17, 17.1, or 17.2. Boom; all of a sudden, I'm seeing it in 17.3, so I don't know. I haven't done anything significantly different with my Zorin 17.3 install. Again, it hasn't come up, so ... again, I don't know. Whole thing's weird as heck. EDIT: I will report back, of course, if it shows again. Will look at the logs and the task manager. Thanks.
Did the icon reveal any source information if hovvered over or clicked? Maybe have to wait until it reappears to test that.
I assume it is not sausage sandwich app icon
Makes a change from hamburger menu icon.
I clicked on the icon. It displayed nothing but a blank small window.
I do have an update, though. I am going to make a new post below.
Update # 2:
So it reappeared while I had Vivaldi open. Vivaldi had been open for quite a while when I happened to notice the icon again (with three dots and two bars). It hadn't been there a minute before. I quickly went to the logs, and saw this:
When I closed Vivaldi, the icon disappeared. Interesting. Any help here? Do you think this is a bug with Vivaldi? Or Zorin 17.3 somehow (I hope not)? Please advise.
I've been using Vivaldi for a long time, but I haven't had that icon appear at all from using it. But I'm also on Lite presently.
Hmm. I wonder ...
Follow-up:
I'm hoping someone can chime in about how to remedy this whole thing other than simply turning off the Zorin AppIndicator extension. Has anyone else had similar issues with Zorin 17.3? Let's put our heads together here. Thanks.
I cheated:
Vivaldi Startup Issue
When launching Vivaldi in Linux, if the Chrome status icon fails to activate, it could be due to a timeout issue with a socket-activated DBus service that Chromium tries to communicate with. This issue can cause the browser to start slowly or fail to launch properly.
To troubleshoot this problem, you can try launching Vivaldi from the terminal with the --no-sandbox
flag, which might resolve the startup issue. Additionally, resetting Vivaldi's settings to their defaults can sometimes help if the browser is not behaving as expected after changing settings.
If the problem persists, it might be helpful to check the availability of the Sync service by visiting the Vivaldi Status page at https://vivaldistatus.com. If there are no updates about a large-scale issue with Vivaldi's service, you can submit a bug report with relevant information such as screenshots from the vivaldi://sync-internals
and vivaldi://settings/sync/
pages.
If none of these solutions work, it could indicate a deeper problem with your system, and reinstalling the operating system or specific components might be necessary.

How was your Vivaldi browser installed, Snap, Flatpak etc?
(I don't use Vivaldi or any Chromium based browsers on ZorinOS, so don't know source.
Christ. I hope not. Thanks ...
.DEB file. I don't use Flatpaks or snap files. I have snaps disabled on Zorin.
The --sandbox
flag will not apply to you, then, since you are using an apt package.
I would not worry about reinstalling.
This is... The kind of behavior I have come to expect from Vivaldi. After giving it dozens of chances (I Love Vivaldi), I finally had to admit defeat and no longer let it anywhere near any GnuLinux system.
Any browser recommendations, then?
Also - I hear you re: Vivaldi. I like it, as well. But they've had past issues (even on Windows). If this icon thing is in fact due to a bug with Vivaldi, then ... I mean, I don't want to have to disable the AppIndicator extension just for one application that's having issues. Again, any suggestions you have would be welcome. Thanks.
It really depends on your needs and your wants. Vivaldi is great if you prioritize customizing and configuring your browsers appearance.
If you value open source, secure and well insulated, I would recommend LibreWolf Browser.
If you want stable and just works; Ungoogled Chromium, Brave Browser or Firefox will fit the bill. Bear in mind, ZorinGroup replaced Firefox as default due to Firefox's new privacy policy being highly questionable and a stark change to the values that made it appealing in the past. However, you are in charge of your computer and you can still use it - indeed, the Firefox policy is less intrusive than Edge Browser...
Thanks. Gonna give this whole thing a bit more time. I just wish this wasn't happening. It's little things like this that I hate seeing on my OS install. Might opt to disable AppIndicator straight up. Blah. Not my preferred solution, though ...
It may be caused by the account sync or to background update checks.
You can disable some background services in the Vivaldi settings > general > background apps
Or launch with all background services disabled (This is a desktop file Exec line):
Exec=vivaldi --disable-features=BackgroundMode %U
to see if that affects the icon in AppIndicator.
Update (final one, too) # 3: Went ahead and disabled the Zorin AppIndicator extension. Will use this as my present solution for a while. After a few more Vivaldi update releases, I'll re-enable it and see if there's been any change.
If the same problem persists, I'll just disable it again. For me, this isn't too much of a big deal, since I do have a couple other extensions disabled, like the "removable drive menu" one. Thanks to all. Appreciate your valuable input.
What You could try is using instead of the Zorin AppIndicator Gnome Extension AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem Support - GNOME Shell Extensions
Loving Zen at the moment and looking forward to alpha release of Ladybird in 2026.
