When is Zorin 18 coming?

i was being a bit silly. But if it doesn't arrive in late August, i will be back to take revenge!!

Are we there yet?

I hope that 17.2 fix the issue for the Secure Boot caused by Win Update

Yeah, we can only hope. It is Debian/Ubuntu making poor choices in not fixing a known and published security flaw from 2022. If Ubuntu gets around to fixing it, which they should, then it should be fixed on even 17.1 as it is based on 22.04 which is an LTS still supported.

I was lucky as I do not dual boot on my laptop running Zorin.

I agree Clintre, I don't dual boot either. I removed Windows like you would remove an obnoxious bulbous zit. I am a full believer in the Linux platform, and with that, I super duper love Zorin OS.

Welcome to Zorin OS, the best home in the world, and over here, I got it on 3 screens. Awaiting Zorin OS 18 patiently, as I always do.

FYI I don't dual boot, I removed Windows from an entire SSD and installed Zorin (but with secure boot disabled, because otherwise trigger the shim sbat error on the USB before even starting the live system)

Zorin OS typically follows a release cycle that has a 1-year delay compared to Ubuntu's Long-Term Support (LTS) releases (e.g. Zorin OS 16 came out a year after Ubuntu 20.04 LTS).

The reasonable estimate for Zorin OS 18's release would be sometime in late 2025 or early 2026. However, this could vary depending on Zorin OS's development timeline and the specific features they're working on.

I think it is more far reaching than laying the blame at distro level:

Of course it did! Microsoft breaks every rule in the book, so as long as it benefits them. They are not about fare use, free use, or open source! They are only about their bottom line, which is unfettered greed, and using your soul, to extract as much of it as possible.

There was a time in which I could say, sure you can dual boot, people been doing it for years for Windows and Linux. But now days, I can't in all conscious, recommend dual booting with Windows and Linux.

Smart money is on switching to Linux, and never going back to Microsoft Windows ever again. The beauty of Linux, is you can pick the distro that best matches your workflow.

One of the reasons why I love Zorin OS so much, is its a jack of all trades OS, it can pretty much do it all. And IMHO, I strongly and whole heartedly believe, that Zorin OS is the best Linux OS there is.

I don't know if this is a company policy or the small size of the development team.

The Zorin development team is literally 2-people, thats it.

When you only have 2-developers, things are going to take time. Every single year, I spot people on here, who are so impatient, that right after the Zorin team just releases the next Zorin version, they are already asking for when the next version is going to be. :man_shrugging:

I also think that often folks forget, LTS releases, actually last for years, before support drops for them. Take me for example, I am still on OS 16, I never upgraded to OS 17, because I wasn't convinced, that it was right for me. Does that mean my OS implodes on itself? NO! Because my OS gets support till 2025!

And this works out in my favor, because its highly likely that Zorin OS 18, will release sometime, in 2025, and that it will be better then OS 17. So what do I gain in my patience? I gain the ability to not be stressing over, when its going to release. I get to enjoy an older but stable OS, that just works, and works well.

If you folks want the latest greatest thing, you can jump aboard POP OS, or Ubuntu, and watch as your stripped away Gnome OS, offers you great frustration. Now I ask you, does that seem logical? Or, does it sound more logical, just to wait till the Zorin team have flushed out all the bugs, and offer OS upgrades, better features and stability, with the next release of OS 18?

I know which way I am going to go, and that is being patient, and upgrading to OS 18, once its released. I don't need the latest greatest shinny thing, when what I have with OS 16, just works. Patience people, you must learn patience.

If I'm not wrong the Patch is almost there. When You make a sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade You should see a hold-back Package called ''shim-signed'':

That should be the Patch for this Stuff. Now it is hold-back. We will see how long. Maybe it is in a couple Days available.

Back in 2021 you said the same about Pop! OS. What is so different now ?

Apparently you forgot after all this time. But after my installation of POP OS got trashed, i switched back to Zorin OS, and never left.

Having said that, both @Aravisian and I know, once POP OS upgraded their gnome version to, take away your options for OS freedom, im content to stay on Zorin OS.

BTW, you might want to use a cooling pad under your notebook computer. I heard your fans ramping up, computer getting hot. A cooling pad might help with that.

Im using a cooling pad under my notebook computer, cause my system gets pretty hot doing, gaming, production. And in summer time, I run my AC unit to cool down the room, to help with ambient.

Well, Pop OS will no longer have Issues with Gnome when they bring there new Cosmic Desktop.

I was about to say that, it's not Pop! OS who removes user choices but GNOME does do that. That's why they are creating cosmic. If you check youtube how stable it already is and how fast compared to 22.04.

Not ramping up, i activated cooler boost on my laptop (FN + Up Key). But thanks for the tip though.

I'd be very happy if they skipped 24.04, and jumped to 24.10, as many very problematic things got fixes or partial fixes there, and 25.04 umorives on some even more. These are more disturbing for gamers, people consuming quality audio, and for some bluetooth devices. I do all 3, I switched to 24.10 to make it tolerable. If an alpha/beta build was available with one of these, I'd be installing it asap.

Welcome to the Forum!

24.10 and 25.04 are STS Versions but Zorin is based on LTS Versions. So, that will not happen.

As much as having a new version can be exciting, I just hope the Zorin brothers don't sacrifice stability and performance just to show the world there are new versions. I don't mind if Zorin OS 18 comes in December 2025 as long as whenever it's ready, it's as stable as 17.2 today.
