Why is PageEdit 1.7.0 still included in Zorin if it’s outdated and incompatible with Sigil 2.3.1?

Hello, I don’t quite understand, so I’m asking you: why keep a version of PageEdit 1.7.0 that is no longer updated and not compatible with Sigil 2.3.1? I use Sigil a lot and would like to pair it with the PageEdit editor, but the Zorin developers insist on providing an outdated version. Unfortunately, I’ve come to the conclusion that if I can’t use PageEdit, it would be better for me to leave Zorin and choose another Operating System that allows me to have up-to-date software.

Thank you in advance for your reply and for the attention you will give to my request.

You can use the appimage of page edit:

It is the current version 2.6.2.

How to use appimage:

That is because of the Concept of an LTS Distro. LTS Distros get primary Security Updates and Bug Fixes. So, You don't get continuos up-to-date Software on a LTS Distro. That doesn't count only for Zorin. Stability is here the Point. The Software is tested and to avoid Instability, it stands on this until the next Main Release.

If You want up-to-date Software, something like Fedora would be a better Choice. Or You go on the bleeding Edge with Arch or an Arch-based Distro.

Thank you both for your replies.

I understand now:

  • as Ponce-De-Leon explained, Zorin OS being an LTS distro focuses mainly on stability and long-term support, which is why some software versions are outdated.
  • as Forpli suggested, there is the AppImage of PageEdit, which is a possible solution to have the latest version.

However, for my personal workflow I prefer to rely on software provided directly by the OS package manager instead of AppImages. That is why I was expecting a more up-to-date version of PageEdit in Zorin repositories, especially since I use Sigil regularly and would like to pair it with its official companion editor.

Given this, I think I may need to consider another distro (like Fedora, Debian, or Linux Mint) that offers more up-to-date software while still keeping stability.

Thank you again for taking the time to explain!

Soon Zorin 18 will be released, then it will be based on ubuntu 24.04 and offer newer packages.

Thank you for the information, Forpli.
It’s good to know that Zorin 18 will be based on Ubuntu 24.04 and will probably bring newer packages.

Unfortunately, my work does not allow me to wait longer, and there is no guarantee that PageEdit will actually be updated in the new release. For this reason, I have to seriously consider moving to another distro that already provides more up-to-date software. I am even considering going back to Windows, which always ensures effective and timely updates for the tools I need.

Anyway, thank you again for your help and for clarifying the situation.

You can use "Gear Lever" to manage your AppÍmages. It's in the repositories (flatpak).

When the Developer of the software You need, has Instructions to add a Repo to get the Software, You could do that. And if I see that right, the Link @Forpli posted with the Appimage is directly from the Developer. So, You would have it directly from the Source as a ready-to-use Package.

In fairness, he defined the OS package management, which is Zorin OS in this case, not the Sigil Developer.

I didn't find a repo for this software.

Yes, but for the Case the Software Version isn't the right one and the Developer offers the Option to add a Repo, this would be a Way to get the Software, too.

And when there is no Repo and the Developer offers an AppImage like @Forpli has linked above, then this is an Option, too beneath an eventual existing .deb File.
