Wide screen startup blank

Hi!

First time here! Enjoying Zorin 18 Pro! Pretty solid so far!

I have a lenovo legion, with Nvidia GPU 1050, working with my Dell wide screen.
When the HDMI cable is plugged into the HDMI port (connecting the wide screen) and I try to log in I get a black screen where the cursor shows up, an X.
Pressing the power button changes the X to the normal cursor, when I start it back up again I can log in as normal.

When I tried starting up with no HDMI plugged in I can log in without issue.

Any idea what it is?

Thanks!

Welcome Stoffel

During the installation process, did you choose the NVIDIA drivers option? Stoffel die ratel

If so, the next thing to do is your "windowing" from the default which is Wayland, to Xorg. Log out, then at the login window, select your user name. Before entering the password, look down and to the right of the window and click on the "sprocket" icon. Choose the "Zorin plus Xorg (X11) option (however it is worded). Continue to log in.

(The Xorg option will be invisible to you compared to Wayland and will remain the default unless you go back in the same way and change it. I and many others run on Xorg. It's a great option, and is especially good for solving hardware issues.)

Welcome to the Forum!

Did You tried different HDMI Ports? Are Secure Boot and Fast Boot in BIOS disabled? What Nvidia Driver do You use?

Thank you Ponce-De-Leon!

I only have the one on my laptop if that is what you mean?
My other computer computer connect to a different HDMI and DP port does not have this issue.
Ooooh! I will need to check on Secure Boot and Fast boot!

The Nvidia driver I use is 590.48.01.

BUT all this being said!

I saw I was lacking some updates, I update through the software updater and it all worked with no issue!

Thank you very much for the assistance.

Will go and check on the secure and fast boot setting though, just so I learn a bit more!

Thank you @wsmather !

It seems though I was missing an update, I was silly and thought I had kept up to date. After the update, through the software updater, all seems to be fine.

I will still shut down and then power on again to see what happens. Will follow your advice when if this happens again.

Honestly can't remember what option I selected on my install.

Hi @wsmather and @Ponce-De-Leon
I did some tests.

After the update the restart worked all good and well.

However, when I shutdown and then power back up, I looked at what @wsmather said.
I clicked to login in on password, looked at bottom right for sprocket/gear, it was there.

The options are:

  • Zorin Desktop
  • Zorin Desktop on Wayland

When I selected the first one, Zorin Desktop which seems to be the default, I got the issue again.
I hit the power button to suspend - wait for laptop to suspend, turn it back on login with no issue.

Then to test the other option (on Wayland), I turned off the laptop, turned it on, selected Zorin Desktop on Wayland and there was a login with no issue at all.

Not sure why this is, does this mean secure / fast boot might be contributing to this? I guess this is considered a bug? Kind of new to the linux stuff so not sure what the correct terminology is here?

Another note, my background login is different on start up after the laptop is shutdown is this normal? It's different than my background for when I lock/log off or restart, not sure if that tells us anything though.

Anyway, it seems there are ways around this issue? Let me know if there is anything I need to check or test?

Some system details:

NVIDIA:
NVIDIA Driver Version: 590.48.01
NVML Version: 13.590.48.01

OS:
Zorin OS 18.1 Pro

Monitor:
Dell S3422DWG

All I can say is I'm still super happy because windows isn't causing me to pull my hair out, or having one drive bogging down all my system resources! Zorin and anything linux related is a breathe of fresh air.

The first Option is in Your Case the X11/Xorg Option and the 2nd the Wayland Option. These are Display Protocols. the first one is an older one but normally more reliable. the 2nd one is a neewer one but can be a bit unstable depending on used Hardware and Software. When Wayland works for You, it is fine. Then simply use it.

The Login Screen (when You boot or reboot) is something different than the Lock Screen. So, that they look different is normal.
