WINE Update Problems

I would like to update WINE and have proceeded according to the following instructions:

After running

sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-staging

I get the following error message: E: Problems cannot be corrected, you have retained defective packages.

What can I do?

Can you please run

sudo apt --fix-broken install

Once that is done, let's check your Wine Sources. Which repositories did you add?

How do I find out?

0 updated, 0 newly installed, 0 to be removed and 34 not updated.

I'm trying to solve my problem with the help of chatgpt, but it can't find a solution so far. It's cool to see that Cahtbot knows Linux, though.

If you open up Software Updater, when that finishes checking for updates, click 'Settings' to the left of the dialogue, then at the top tab, 'Other Software' - the added Wine repos should be in that list.

I recommend completely removing all Wine Repositories.
Once all wine repos are removed using either Software & Updates > other software or by terminal, then re-add the proper wine repo:

sudo wget -NP /etc/apt/sources.list.d/

sudo apt update

sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-stable

Thank you. And how do I do that?

You can launch Software & Updates and navigate to the Other software tab.
Scroll through the list and locate any WINE repositories. You need to look carefully and double check... lists like that make it easy to miss things.
Click on Wine Repository, then click on the Remove Button on the lower toolbar.

Does not work!

sudo apt update
[sudo] Passwort für ms:
E: Widersprüchliche Werte gesetzt für Option Signed-By betreffend die Quelle Index of /wine-builds/ubuntu focal: /etc/apt/keyrings/winehq-archive.key !=

When is Zorin 17 finally coming? I would then set up the system again.

the default wine installed in zorin is outdated and not recommended to install as wine is continuously being updated. to properly install wine's latest version you should delete the existing one completely and reinstall how the offical website tells you to. Ubuntu WineHQ Repository - WineHQ Wiki
(zorin 16 is based on ubuntu 20.04)

after installing the latest wine you can check it's version using wine --version command

Zorin OS is tentatively expected to be released by the end of this year. That date is not set.

Let's remove the key. This... will be more tedious.
Run in terminal:

sudo apt-key list

This will provide a list of all your apt keys. We need to find the Wine Focal Key.
Once you locate the block that has the Wine Focal Repository key, look at the line for pub
You will see a long string on the next line below that looks like this format, with a random seeming series of Letters and Numbers. I have created a fake using only F and 4 in order to avoid accidentally posting an existing repo key.
F4F4 4F44 4F4F 4FAF 4F4F F444 444F F4F4 FFFF 4444

What you need is the Last Eight Digits - that is your key I.D. No space in between. From the above example, it would be FFFF4444
Now use (Replace the FFFF4444 with your actual Wine Focal Key I.D.)

sudo apt-key del FFFF4444

Re-add a good copy of the key:

sudo wget -O /etc/apt/keyrings/winehq-archive.key

In terminal, run

sudo apt update

Usage: apt-key [--keyring file] [command] [arguments]

Manage apt's list of trusted keys

apt-key add - add the key contained in ('-' for stdin)
apt-key del - remove the key
apt-key export - output the key
apt-key exportall - output all trusted keys
apt-key update - update keys using the keyring package
apt-key net-update - update keys using the network
apt-key list - list keys
apt-key finger - list fingerprints
apt-key adv - pass advanced options to gpg (download key)

If no specific keyring file is given the command applies to all keyring files.

If only I hadn't trusted chatgpt. Now the problem is probably bigger than before.

Could it be that I can no longer run any updates at all?

Is this what you entered?
The command is

sudo apt-key list

I do not see anything amiss in the above.

Can you outline or review your chatGPT history to show us what you did?
