Would like to deactivate mouse scroll wheel zoom

Hello, Zorin newbie here. I am trying to resolve an annoyance.

While reading a page in my browser, scrolling the mouse wheel towards myself, the browser page scrolls down. When I scroll the wheel away from myself, the page scrolls upward. This is the mouse scroll wheel behaviour I want.

Other times, without even touching the Ctrl key, the scroll wheel will affect my browser's zoom. Scroll wheel towards me, the browser view zooms out. Scrolling the mouse wheel in the opposite direction helps for a split second before ceasing. The behaviour seems to be sporadic.

Is there a setting where I can deactivate the mouse wheel zoom? I don't see anything in the "Mouse and Touchpad" settings. Is there a command?

I am encountering this issue in Firefox, Brave and Opera browsers.
Thanks.

Do you have another mouse that you can try? My first thought would be there's something wrong with the one you're currently using.

I'm not sure if there's a setting to disable that behavior since it's pretty standard. However, on Firefox, you can modify the action of the mouse wheel so that it scrolls instead of zoom. Not sure if it will help, but it's worth a shot.

Thanks for the reply. My laptop is an HP Pavilion 17z built in 2016. The touchpad is incredibly sensitive. The cursor can behave erratically if my thumb comes anywhere close to the touchpad when I type. I never really use the touchpad as I prefer the touch and feel of the mouse. On spec, I turned off the touchpad in the Zorin "Mouse and Touchpad" settings. Lo and behold, I just spent an hour scrolling up and down a several webpages using the browsers mentioned in my original post. The zoom never unexpectedly changed. Not once. Turning off the touchpad Seems to be working, for now. I'll try the solution you've provided.

Thank you, zenzen

If you cannot reproduce the same issue using an external mouse, then it all points to the trackpad. It may be that it's faulty, but it could also be that the drivers available for it don't work properly. This largely depends on the make and model of the laptop and how "unique" is it (some manufacturers like to be fancy).

The whole topic of drivers is not really my area so I can't really recommend anything if this indeed is the case, but should give a clue as to where to start.

While scrolling yesterday with the mouse wheel my screen zoomed. As I said the other day my touchpad was turned off, so it obviously wasn't the culprit. I made the change you suggested to Firefox. The screen never unexpectedly zoomed. Thanks again.

I'm not well versed with drivers either.

Oh, well, that's at least some progress. I'm sure that other browsers have similar settings but I'd have to look into them as well. As for driver support, maybe it's something that can be fixed by upcoming upgrades; the older the hardware, the better support Linux tends to have.
