Write operations causing lags/freeze

I'm running Zorin 17 dual booted with windows 11 for about a year now.
Since the last week I've started having this issue where any kind of write operation in Zorin causing massive lags and freezes. Its particularly noticeable when downloading something and the system becomes unusable and freezes.
However, after the download or operation is completed, it resumes normality.
Any help would be appreciated

Hi, and welcome to the Zorin OS forums!

Just to get some basic questions out of the way:

  1. Have you noticed any trend in the files that you're downloading that cause this? For example, are they always large files like games or ISOs?
  2. Does this happen when you move or copy files around?
  3. Are you using some kind of third-party software to download files, like download managers, bundlers, etc?
  4. Have you downloaded any firmware updates through Windows?

If you are using an SSD, check how much space left you have in your Linux partition. The way they work, they tend to perform worse over time because of space constraints.

Do you know if any kernel update was performed by Software Updater before you noticed the change.
If maybe true, try using "Additional Options for Zorin" grub menu item and choose a previous version kernel genreric to boot.
See if any improvement.
