Who among us still uses Zorin 16 as their daily driver? And if so, why?
I think @StarTreker still uses Zorin 16.
First time i tried Zorin was late 17 and tried as daily driver with 18 ... How was it, this 16 version ?
Yes @StarTreker is still on 16 she loves it
thanks - i'll have a look on it and try in a VM if i can find it ![]()
Official download mirrors - Zorin OS its in the list here
Was actually pretty nice. I liked it. It was my Entry Point and helped me to have a good Transition to Linux.
Yes, I've still been using Zorin OS 16 for years. Although, due to circumstances out of my control, I lost my computer. So, things have been really depressing for me these days. I'm forced to only be able to use Android now.
And it doesnt help that I woke up with a headache this morning either, I got to take a couple of Advil.
Why do you use Zorin 16? Do you have a really old computer or what is your reason? Is it because of Zorin 16's stability?
Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that. Has your laptop been lost or is it defective?
Yes, OS 16 was known for its stability, as opposed to when OS 18 came out, which became known for instability, while also pushing Wayland as default. But as I just said, due to circumstances of my situation, I'm not using Zorin OS now.
My laptop was taken from me, I wont go into details on that. But the way this abnormal computer cost inflation is, due to data centers buying up RAM for AI, there is no way I can afford a new high end gaming computer. The only thing I could possibly do, is get a loan to buy the Samsung S12 Ultra tablet when it releases. Its supposed to be a laptop replacement. Its supposed to be able to do video editing, photo editing, 3d modeling, drawing, production eorkloads basically, as well as gaming and streaming movie and show content. Its not exactly the same as a full fledged PC no. The cost of things now days, there aint no way Ill ever afford another one. High end gaming PC's now cost 6K and up, for both desktops and laptops. Youd need something larger then a small personal loan to afford them. Oh well, these are the end times were living in, nothing good ever happens, only bad things.
And when You don't go High End? Looking for a more Ratio of Cost to Benefit? I mean, yes. For RAM You lose in any Way. 400⬠or $ will it be minimum. But maybe You can balance it out through some other Components. And when the Look doesn't matter, You can let matching Optics fall.
Hey Ponce. I just think its crazy how a top I7 gaming notebook in 2021 cost 3K, now the same equivilent today in 2026, is 6K. Even mid range gaming computers are at least 3K to 5K. I surely dont want to spend that much money, and all I get is a PC slower tgen my notebook from 2021.
Another factor I have to consider is, I have a family member who needs a new computer too. Computers from 2012 cant play anything modern, not even Subnautica from 2018.
While its true that most AAA games on PC are not on mobile, some are though. Subnautica and Alien Isolation, as well as Tomb Raider from 2010, and Red Dead Redemption are on mobile. Their are simpler games on mobile too like, Bejeweled, Plants Vs Zombies, and Dead Effect.
Honestly, its more about retraining the mind. How much do I need, vs how much do I want, which translates to, hiw much I wana spend, or go in debt for.
Companies like Apple and Samsung, are aiming for notebook replacements, based on my limited knowledge so far, it appears they are starting to succeed that direction.
So Iām aiming to buy 2 tablets when I can, 1 for me, 1 for a family member. Also, im planning to buy a quality bluetooth headset for me as well, I can use with the tablet.
For in the home use, I plan to get a multiport dock, which I can plugin my 4K 32" monitor to the tablet. I will also have a keyboard and mouse to use with it, when Im not portable using the S pen.
Samsung tablets have a mode called DEX, thats your dedktop experience mode. So, its still Android OS, but with tge familiarty of Windows. Simular how Zorin OS is Linux, but with familiarty of Windows.
In my specific situation, 2 tablets are better then the cost of 1 overpriced computer. I agree with you on the RAM. If you short change yourself on RAM, your computer will be as slow as a 2000's era machine, in 2026.
The specs listed so far, for the Samsung S12 Ultra tablet will be. Mediatech 9500 CPU, 16GB of RAM, on the top 1TB atorage mode. I can expand the storage more with a micro sd card, but its slower then built in storage, so you dont want a sd card for app storage. 14.6" AMOLED screen.
As soon as the tablet releases, ill be buying it. The family member wont need 1TB of storage, so I can get them the 512GB model, which will be enough for them. And 16GB for a flagship tablet, is lije having 32GB of RAM for a PC. Tablets utilize RAM more properly.
Ok ..im talking a desk top now..not a laptop...built this one back at begining of 2021 had a case and power supply as well as 3 ssds and a vid card so back then...havnt looked at now i did a motherboard combo....motherboard cpu and memory shipped was $600. now if ya dont have the stuff i had will most diffently be way more now with vid/memory price increases for sure. and you would need to be a bit savoy at building a computer from scratch
since then i added in 2 nvme ssds vs the sata style i had and a bluray burner as well as an AIO watercooler
I have the skills and knowledge to build a computer, but the last computer I built, was in 2005, thus, I have none of the parts I need to build a new one. Yeah, price costs have doubled for most things, RAM triplled of course.
I started buying notebooks since 2012, cause they used to be cheaper. Prices have sored the the roof since then. I appreciatd your understanding. And desktops are cool if you have the space for them, and you got enough cooling for them as well.
These modern day CPU's produce so much heat, if you got a cord I9 or equivilent, ya gonna need an AIO lol.
Maybe these could be a Start (I looked at Amazon Germany):
- Crucial PRO 32GB 6000 389,75ā¬
- ASUS RX9060XT 16GB 434,90⬠/ ASUS Prime RX9070 OC Edition 16GB 634,63ā¬
- AMD 7700X3D 319,32⬠/ 9800X3D 359,99ā¬
- Gigabyte B850m Force WIFI 130,74ā¬
- WD Black SN7100 1TB 164,90ā¬
- Thermalright Cooler Dual-Tower round about 40ā¬-45ā¬
When You still have somewhere a Case and Power Supply and there are still fine, You could use them.
Sure, these are not High End but should offer a decent Gaming Experience.
I started on 17, then upgraded to 18, then downgraded to 16 where I have stayed. It was after reading StarTreker posts that I made the switch and have not had a single issue. So it remains my workhorse while I satisfy my curiosity with other distros like Solus and aereynOS. (Bummed about your computer, StarTreker.)
Im glad my posts were helpful, that is why I do what I do here, to help others. Zorin OS 16 is an excellent OS, and diesnt become bad, simply because its no longer supported. Ultimately, what anyone needs, is an OS that just works, and isnt a pain to troubleshoot. Im happy for you Wes.
This happened to me over 2 months ago, it will be 3 momths in September. I have trauma over what happened and Ive been deeply depressed. Despite all that, I continue to work, try to keep busy. Ive also been thinking about my mom, who I lost when I was 19, I would love to have her back in my life, thats how badly I've been doing.
There is a song that has the lyrics, "waiting is the hardest part." So thats what I'm doing, waiting till Samsung releases this years tablet. I shoukd be able to get a loan from my credit union without an issue, I have a 720 credit score, hopefully secure a low interest rate with thst idk.
@StarTreker ya i went with the AIO watercooler due to this machine is a Ryzen 9 5900x 12 core slightly overclocked from 3.6Mhz to 4.0 Mhz
Currently on a Ubuntu machine
