This has been happening consistently where by I have no choice but do a hard shutdown on my newly purchased Asus Zenbook 14 with Processor AMD Ryzen 7 8840H and 16gb ram, 512 gb SSD. I primarily use Firefox, watch videos, take courses, zoom meetings. Doesn't happen on Windows 11 which Zorin 17.3 Pro is installed on the same ssd, equal partition size.
Are there any logs I can capture to troubleshoot? I'm hoping Zorn 18 will help
For your new hardware you probaby need a later kernel than Zorin 17 and maybe even Zorin 18 offers. Perhaps you also need later graphics drivers. You can install them in Zorin 17 if you want.
Are secure boot and fast boot in your BIOS turned off during Linux use? Is fast startup in Windows also disabled?
Try to switch to Xorg. Logout and at login click on your username then a cog wheal appears at the bottom right corner. There select "Zorin Desktop on Xorg"
If it's a fresh install, you might as well try Zorin 18.
I agree with D-Man, if install is fresh like the prince of Belair, why not just install the latest release of OS 18, which does come with a later kernel.
Thanks, I'm waiting for the upgrade option since I'm on 17.3 Pro.
Just installed Mainline and upgraded to 17.5 kernel, I hope this works. Do you know if the kernel will remain once I upgrade to Zorin 18 Pro? The update did have a snag once I restarted but Synaptic prompted a warning to clean up the partial update and now I'm back on, no more warnings now. Really appreciate this suggestion. Ron
Yes, the kernel will still be present if you run the Zorin Upgrader to Zorin OS 18.
I hope Zorin 18 does a better job since my Asus Zenbook again just froze on my Zorin 17.3 Pro resulting in a force shutdown. I'm on my Windows 11 now again.
Hmm... i had big performance issues on an older Asus Zenbook i set up for mum. I applied the following and it made a huge difference - here's my notes:
I found a performance issue wrt indexing - it was taking huge CPU toll. Refer: Tracker-miner-fs Indexing and High CPU Usage - #4 by Aravisian
Run htop to see if "Tracker-miner-fs" is taking CPU. It might be close to 100%. If it doesn't stop in a few minutes, something isn't right.
Disable it:
systemctl --user mask tracker-extract-3.service tracker-miner-fs-3.service tracker-miner-rss-3.service tracker-writeback-3.service tracker-xdg-portal-3.service tracker-miner-fs-control-3.service
tracker3 reset -s -r
Reboot
If so desired, to reverse it:
systemctl --user unmask tracker-extract-3.service tracker-miner-fs-3.service tracker-miner-rss-3.service tracker-writeback-3.service tracker-xdg-portal-3.service tracker-miner-fs-control-3.service
tracker3 reset -s -r
Reboot
Thanks, I'll try and report back!
@arbywan Just a reminder that you cannot automatically upgrade to 18 Pro, you would need to purchase a new copy. As you have the Pro version already you can get support from Team Zorin via the support request link here:
I'm waiting for the upgrade option to pay.
