Zorin 18.1 on external SSD will not boot

I have Zorin 18.1 installed on a 256Gb SSD. The Zorin distro on a Ventoy stick will install on my HP EliteBook, but a full install on the SSD will not. The laptop just keeps trying to connect, then does connect to the Windows 11 installed on the HP laptop. I tried changing the boot order to boot to the SSD first and it kept trying, but never connected. Any ideas why?

so the ssd is external? and does your bios have ability to boot from usb in the settings? Not real fimilur with HP bios but check in your bios if it has boot from usb ability..... looks like there is a setting in there to enable usb booting....enable it then make sure the external ssd is in the first boot slot then hit F10 or whatever HP uses to save changes in the bios....and it should boot from the external usb ssd drive

M.2 in a case. Box is checked for USB Storage Boot. Tried making the external SSD first in boot order and the boot sequence keeps going in circles and not booting to anything.

so that was only option no enable usb booting? just usb storage booting?
HP makes stuff so difficult at times...lol

Steps to Boot from an External SSD on HP EliteBook

Accessing the BIOS

  1. Turn Off Your Laptop: Ensure your HP EliteBook is completely powered down.
  2. Enter BIOS:
  • Power on the laptop.
  • Immediately press the F10 key repeatedly until the BIOS menu appears.

Configuring Boot Options

  1. Enable USB Boot:
  • Navigate to the Boot Options tab in the BIOS.
  • Ensure that USB Boot is enabled.
  1. Set Boot Order:
  • Locate the boot order settings.
  • Move the external SSD to the top of the boot order list to make it the primary boot device.

Saving Changes and Restarting

  1. Save Changes:
  • After making the necessary changes, select the option to Save Changes and Exit.
  • Confirm any prompts to save your settings.
  1. Boot from External SSD:
  • Insert the external SSD into a USB port.
  • Restart your laptop. It should now boot from the external SSD if configured correctly.

By following these steps, you should be able to successfully boot your HP EliteBook from an external SSD.

Did not work. The HP keeps trying but fails. Probably would try all day long and not make it. I will post on the HP Community.

Do you have Zorin installation USB stick.
If yes, use that to run Gparted and see if that reveals all your drives and partitions.

This external SSD will run on my HP ZBook but not on my HP EliteBook.

ok so the elitebook isnt setup to usb boot but the hp zbook is have you checked to make sure your bios are upto date on the elitebook?

Not sure, I will check that out before doing anymore. Thanks.

I'm wondering if it could be a MBR/GPT problem.

How is the SSD formatted?

Dumb question probably but is secure boot disabled?

Yes it is disabled. Should it not be?

It should be, but if it were not it would have stopped you from booting Zorin.

Another question based on the wording of your first post: are you still trying unsuccessfully to install Zorin on the SSD or have you installed it and trying unsuccessfully to get it to boot?

Keeping the secure boot disabled is prefered

He tryed it on his Zbook and it boots fine its the elitebook he is having troubles with

I also had him check if he has the latest bios..to make sure it was uptodate as the post of instructions was suggested by AI but did come from HP

It is possible that the windows 11 install my be interfering as well not sure tho

His first post said

But I think he means boot or run not install.
