Zorin 18 and Dell E5470 Latitude laptop

Hi All,

i am wondering if anyone else is having this issue.

i have a Dell E5470 Latitude Laptop which had Zorin 17.2 Core on it. I then wiped the drive and did a fresh install of Zorin 18. After the reboot eveyrthing booted up fine with no issues. i normally set the laptop to Sustepend mode when not in use.

After a few sessions of Suspend and then a session the keyboard stops working in Zorin Screens.

For example...

Open Librewolf, and type in the address bar and the keyboard works and registers all the keys.

But open a zorin window Settings -> Search... and no keyboard registers.

Also I have tried opening the terminal, and no keyboard registers.

After a reboot everything works fine all windows register the keyboard.

I did not have this issue in Zorin OS 17.

Has anyone had this same problem?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Drezin

Do You have set it to automatic Suspend or do you manually click on the Suspend Button?

Hi @Ponce-De-Leon Thank you for responding.

I do have Screen dim and Screen lock set to 5 minutes. It is set to Automatic Suspend "When on Battery Power"

Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks,

It could help to go manually into suspend by pressing the button in start menu. You could test if the keyboard works then. Some computers have difficulties with suspend mode in Linux.

Thanks @Forpli

I turned off "When on battery power" and will manually set it to suspend and see if that works. Will let you all know in a few days.

Thank you again!

You could also check some things:
Are secure boot and fast boot in your BIOS disabled?
Is fast startup in Windows disabled if you use Dualboot with Windows?
Are you on Wayland or XOrg? It may help to switch to Xorg (logout and at login click on your username, then click on the cogwheel at the bottom right corner and select "Zorin Desktop on Xorg".

If nothing helps you could try it with adding the kernel parameter "atkbd.reset"
to file
/etc/default/grub

Enter

sudo nano /etc/default/grub

Then navigate with the arrow keys to the line and change it as shown in the link.
Save the file by pressing ctrl+o, then enter, then ctrl+x
and then run

sudo update-grub

Thanks @Forpli

Secure Boot is Disabled
Fast Boot is set to Through meaning disabled.
My session is set to Xorg
Not Dual Booting

I will try your fix if it happens again, I have not shut it off and been manually suspending the laptop to see if the problem persists. Thank you for the help will post again after what happens in about a week.

It looks like it has been a week and I have had no issues with the keyboard. I guess manually set to suspend is what did it.
Thanks everyone for your help!

So far Zorin OS 18 seems pretty great. So much so that i have convinced my wife to wipe her dual booted Windows/Zorin drive and go full install on Zorin 18. I also converted a friend who took his 15 year old computer to 18.

One look at the terms of service from Microsoft sealed the deal.

I am still waiting on the upgrade path from 17 to 18 but patient for that to happen.

Cheer All!
