Hello, in Zorin OS, when Zorin Desktop is selected on the password entry screen, it does not open, when I enter a password, it asks for a password again and this continues continuously, but when Zorin Desktop on Xorg is selected, it enters without any problems, what is the reason for this? What is the difference between Zorin Desktop and Zorin Desktop on Xorg (I think it is X11)? Can I switch to Zorin Desktop and in the future it may not open in Xorg? Because Zorin Desktop was working when it was first installed.
Yes, Xorg is X11. And the other is Wayland. Do you maybe have disabled Wayland entirely in Past in the gdm3 Config File?
Actually I don't think I turned it off because I didn't change many terminals and settings because I'm a new user.I entered a code from ChatGPT to change the gdm settings to default and it's still not fixed.
What code did you use ??? gdm is a display manager and should not be messed with.
Do You remember what Code that was?
I wrote this after the problem started:
1)Setting to Enable Wayland
a)sudo nano /etc/gdm3/custom.conf
b)Remove the # sign at the beginning of the WaylandEnable=false line and change this line to WaylandEnable=true:
2)sudo systemctl restart gdm
The :
at the end are false. It have to be WaylandEnable=true
Alternatively You can use #WaylandEnable=false
because the #
comment it out.
You should check that. And a Reboot could help, too.
Now I have reverted back to the original state (#WaylandEnable=false) and still Wayland is not working, could it be because I am using Nvidia? I read something like that. Also, is it a big problem that Wayland won't open, maybe in the future Xorg won't open either?
Well, theoretically, you should be able to switch to Wayland even when You use an Nvidia Card, but Xorg is better with Nvidia. So, it would be better to stay at it at the Moment.
If it is a big Problem that Wayland won't open/work ... In Theory not. But it depends what Issue it is and if it affects other Things.
What You could try is to reinstall the Zorin Desktop and GDM. Maybe this will resets it. If you want try this, open the Terminal and type:
sudo apt reinstall zorin-os-desktop gdm3
Yes that is very possible. Prior to Nvidia driver 550, Wayland lacks Nvidia support.
it didn't work it still won't open but thank you anyway
Thank you for responding. I don't really care since I can still use it, but I'm worried that Xorg won't open in future updates.
You do not need to worry about that. Xorg will continue to function for years to come.
There is some misinformation spreading on the web about Xorg/X11.
One is that it is an abandoned project. It is not.
In fact, it is the Xorg Team itself that is actively currently working on the compatibility issues between Wayland and the existing GnuLinux desktop -of which are many.
Wayland is not actually new. It has been in active development, with many stalls, for over a decade. It has remained a work in progress for most of those years, with a strong push from Gnome and IBM to bring it mainstream in spite of it being fundamentally flawed.
Many things ( a long list) of applications simply do not work on Wayland including screen sharing and remote desktop networking. Even Gnome had to integrate its Screenshot tool into the shell to get it to work since Gnome-Screenshot cannot work on Wayland (talk about really bowing to corporate pressure).
Wayland is Trendy. Like A.I. And as such, getting pushed. But if it cannot cut the mustard, then the rock-steady and reliable X11 Desktop simply must remain viable or there is no GnuLinux...
So you can rest assured that X11 will remain.
And yes... it is very frustrating that the internet gets polluted with misinformation. No, Diddy does not have a tunnel under his house. No, FEMA was not withholding any funding during he recent US Hurricane.
Sadly - the nature of the internet necessitates that readers must fact-check what they read and can not just take claims made at face value.
Thank you very much for the information, I will continue to use X11 with peace of mind thanks.
So will I.
