I experienced more freezes due to GB since last time.
And just now I had another freeze when I was in Obsidian.
Obviously there is no end-user solution to this — it is a bug that need to be fixed — but I am just registering my experience here for the record while I am still evaluating which distro I will replace Zorin with.
Try give Solus OS a swirl. It's bleeding edge rolling distro and it's easy to use (well for me it is ). If the freezee still happens to your computer on other distros, you may consider it can be faulty hardware.
It depends what you are look ing for. Like @Storm has written Solus is a nice Distro but You have to handle this different because it isn't a Debian/Ubuntu based Distro.
Always a good Recommendation for me is Linux Mint but You must like Cinnamon. But I have the Choice between a Debian Base and a Ubuntu Base. And it is a LTS-based Distro.
An in-between Thing would be Fedora. It gets more Updates than a LTS Distro but isn't at the Edge like a rolling Release Distro. The release Cycle has there a good Balance between both Models I think. And you have a good Choice for Desktop's.
I actually know Solus a bit because I ran it for a few months a couple of years ago. I can't remember why I dropped it.
I don't want an Ubuntu-based distro anymore, and I want stability, so my shortlist consists of 2 options: MX and LMDE. Both are Debian-based and supposedly rock solid. The 1st is non-systemd, the 2nd one is systemd.
I ran them both in a VM and they both performed well. I tried other distros in the same VM and they performed less well, or even not at all.
There is no doubt in my mind now that, contrary to Storm's insinuation, the freeze problem is not with my computer because there are different people now who have experienced freezes for different reasons in different circumstances.
The freeze problem has been around for some years, but it seems to me the devs, for some reason, are not interested to fix the problem — instead the user is expected to fix it themselves, which invariably involves jumping through hoops.
At this stage that does not mean anything as 1 day is too short a period to be able to make a definite statement.
I already used Podman before, I had been using it for more than a month whitout issues of freeze.
The freeze when used with Docker is immediate, I don't even need to wait to see if it occurs. The "Distrobox + Docker + VsCode" set kills my machine. And strangely it is not due to excessive use of RAM or CPU.
Ah, OK, that for the explanation. Of the 3 I only use VS Code (actually: VS Codium), so I am not affected. But it is good for the record (other who might read this thread) to take away misunderstandings.
Thankfully, I have never had a freeze-up with Zorin in a little over 3 years of continuous and exclusive use as my main driver. This includes the Lite, Core, Education and Pro version of Z15, Z16 and Z17 Pro. This involves 2 very old computers: a 32-bit PC and an iMac. And a new PC.
While these freezes apparently are occurring for the OP here and the few others who are reporting same, it would appear this is rare across the user base.
It seems we have an unfortunate few who must be at an intersection of a perfect storm of something with their hardware, installed software and/or settings and Zorin. Seems like the developers would have a very difficult time finding these rare intersection points.
LMDE is Linux Mint with Debian Base and runs as good as Mint Ubuntu from my Experience with that. I had tested MX Linux with xfce but the xfce Desktop wasn't mine and didn't run like I wanted that. But that is more my Problem than from xfce.
A nice One what I can name is SpiralLinux. It is Debian-based. You have the choice between the Desktop Environments. And it is a configured Debian. I tested the Gnome Version and I found the preinstalled Software way more useful that on Stock Debian. And it only uses Debian Sources.
