Zorin Freezing and running out of memory

I was using my laptop normally, with a Firefox window and one Antigravity window open, when I began to notice my mouse becoming choppy. At the top of my screen, I could see that my memory usage was climbing — I have the Vitals GNOME extension installed.
Shortly after, my laptop became completely unresponsive. The keyboard backlight still responded to key presses, but the screen remained frozen. After about 2–3 minutes, the screen went black, and I was taken to the login screen.

Welcome to the Forum!

Did that happen the first Time? You could try it with disabling Hardware Acceleration in Firefox.

Could You post Your Hardware specs please?

It has happened about 4-5 times since I installed zorin. I installed zorin less than a week ago coming from ubuntu 24.04 where this was also an issue every single day as it occurred at least 3 times a day.

Like I wrote, You could try:

And on this Screen:

Click under ''Disk Capacity'' on Systemdetails to get a Screen with more Details. Look there if Your System runs in Wayland or X11 and what Grsphics Card You have.

I've turned off hardware acceleration in firefox and I haven't experienced it since then, but I'll keep observing and get back to you if anything changes. Thank you so much for your responses.

These are my specs

If you have 16GB of RAM, your system shouldn't be using more then 8GB of RAM, so long as you don't have a ton of tabs open in Firefox/Chrome/Brave. Additionally, your system shouldn't need more then 16GB of RAM, unless you are doing heavy production, coding, or gaming workloads.

I have 32GB of RAM, and this is my usage with 2 browser windows open, several tabs open, and listening to music.

BTW, if you use Stacer or Mission Center, look to see if Gnome Shell is tripping out, on your RAM usage. If you see this, end the process, or restart...

Should it happen again, I would suggest to try it with switching from Wayland ot Xorg.

To do that, go to the Login Screen. Click on your Profile so that the Password Field appears. When it is appeared, You should see a Gear Icon in the bottom right Corner. Click on it and choose the Option ''Zorin Desktop on Xorg'' and then log in.

i changed it to xorg and the issue still persists

I do some web development—running a few Next.js applications and a simple backend occasionally. But recently, after about an hour of use, my memory usage spikes from around 30–45% to 90% or more, and that’s when the freeze happens. The most recent freeze happened about 10 minutes ago, and I'm starting to think it has something to do with Firefox. I opened the browser to copy a URL so I could open it in Brave, and not up to 10minutes later the freeze occurred.

To me, this sounds like a Memory Leak.
There are a lot of things to look at.
To check the Gnome desktop and shell:

watch -n 10 'ps -C gnome-shell -o pid,cmd,%mem,rss'

If you suspect Firefox, you might try running htop (Would need to be installed with sudo apt install htop) or free -h in terminal, launching Firefox and trying to replicate the steps you took previously.

It just happened again even without me running firefox. I did some digging into past freezing issues in the forum, and came across zram. I've installed it and set it up and I really hope it works.

The freezing still persists even after installing and configuring zram. I don't know what else to do. The most recent freeze even happened while my memory was at 26%

Hmm ... maybe Your Memory isn't good anymore. You could run MemTest to see if there are any Errors.
