Zorin Lite With XFCE

For the last several days I have been testing out Zorin Lite and playing around with XFCE DE to customize it to my liking .... and with a few hiccups yesterday which Aravisian managed to walk me through ..... it has gone quite well ....

However mange my surprise this morning when I went back to 16.3 running Cinnamon DE to retrieve something ...... it is gone ..... there is no listing in the drop down menu with Cinnamon listed on it as you can see in the below photo .....

It appears that most everything ..... with the exception of some settings ..... has migrated from the Cinnamon DE to the XFCE DE but I haven't done a real thorough search for missing items yet .....

Is this normal or did I screw something up AGAIN ??????? .....

I am not clear on what you mean. Did you have the Cinnamon DE installed too on top of the Zorin Lite version (which is Xfce)? Or did you install Zorin Core (which is the GNOME version) and were using Cinnamon on top? I remember installing the Cinnamon DE on Pop!_OS and Zorin and it worked fine for both distributions but that was a while back. Did you use any terminal commands to remove the Cinnamon DE?

No I have Zorin 16.3 Pro installed with Cinnamon DE and Zorin Lite which has Xfce DE installed on it ..... Xfce comes installed on Lite and Zorin 16.3 Pro comes with Gnome DE installed but I put the Cinnamon DE on that .... Cinnamon DE is now MIA (Missing In Action) ....

To just add to the confusion I also have Xfce installed with Zorin 16.3 Pro but I don't really use that .... I just installed that to try Xfce on Zorin BEFORE Zorin Lite came out .....

Confused yet ..... I know I am ..... :scream:

I know I am, too.

Run:

sudo apt install --reinstall cinnamon cinnamon-core

Should I run that while in Zorin Lite ???? .... will it effect Xfce ????? ......

It would probably help if I could just keep Zorin Pro with Cinnamon and Zorin Lite with Xfce ..... but I have no idea how to do that without messing up the entire maze of other DE's .....

You can run it anywhere you like. It will reinstall any missing Cinnamon Core components for the desktop, but won't overwrite or affect XFCE. You would log in on Cinnamon the same as usual.

This is where I am getting confused.
Are these two different machines with two different installations?
If so, what would be surprising of Cinnamon not being present in a place where it is not installed?

The different desktops stand apart. They are not installed inside of each other.

No this is just one laptop with one HD dedicated to Zorin ..... my other drive is Windows 10 only ...... I duel boot but as you know that shouldn't effect anything on the other drive .....

I'm just wondering why Cinnamon running on Zorin 16.3 Pro would suddenly have disappeared when I haven't run it in 2-3 days ..... only been working on Zorin Lite

Also when I ran neofetch while running Zorin Lite it calls it Zorin 16.3 ..... is that because like Zorin Pro it doesn't show the Pro ????? ....

Yes, Screenfetch or Neofetch cannot differentiate between Lite, Pro, Core...
But they will show which Desktop Is Loaded.

Did you successfully run the --reinstall cinnamon-core command?

Sorry for the delay but we had a power outage .... typhoon just past us by and it is still raining since yesterday ..... no damage .... so I took advantage and ate lunch ....

Yes Cinnamon is now loaded back to the drop down menu and working just fine ....

I just got done opening every single one of those DE's in the drop down menu just to say I did ..... number of desktops according to neofetch .....

Cinnamon ----- 2

Gnome ----- 4

Xfce ----- 3

As far as Cinnamon is concerned it is problem solved ......

Thank you for your time and great instruction ..... it worked .... :+1:  ..... and now it is nap time .....
