Zorin OS 18 Core r3 Install From USB Fails With Unrecoverable Error

Hello,
I've come to report that on my system:

  • 12th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-12700KF × 20
  • RAM 64.0 GiB
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX™ 3070 Ti
I've wiped the drive (a 1TB m.2) and then used BalenaEtcher to make a USB stick installer of the downloaded "Zorin-OS-18-Core-64-bit-r3.iso". Upon reaching the install step just past selecting time zone and entering my name and password, I get a screen that says, "The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again". I've copied the non-privileged log files & folders from /var/log/ and still have them saved.
I tried using another computer and a fresh download of BelenaEtcher and a fresh download of "Zorin-OS-18-Core-64-bit-r3.iso" on a new/different USB stick and started over with exactly the same results. So, thankfully I've still retained my USB stick containing "Zorin-OS-18-Core-64-bit-r2.iso" and then wiped the drive again and installed using the "Zorin-OS-18-Core-64-bit-r2.iso" USB and it installed perfectly the first time without a single problem.
I thought I'd mention it here in case there are bugs in the latest r3 and can provide logs if needed. I assume the logs may have confidential system information so I'd rather submit them to devs privately, not in the public forum if that's possible.
    Thanks!
  • Did You checked the Checksum of the ISO?
  • Did You tried a different Program than Etcher?
  • Is Your BIOS in UEFI or Legacy Mode?
  • Are Secure Boot and Fast Boot in BIOS disabled?
  • Is Windows still installed? If yes: Is Fast Start-Up in Windows disabled?
  • Did You checked the Checksum of the ISO? YES:
    My File, "Zorin-OS-18-Core-64-bit-r3.iso":
    09959CE793B8A065B70207E46CD646B1DE805FC7E0BAD925CE28DF6E04B7F807
    Zorin OS 18 Core 64-bit (r3):
    09959ce793b8a065b70207e46cd646b1de805fc7e0bad925ce28df6e04b7f807
  • Did You tried a different Program than Etcher? NO
  • Is Your BIOS in UEFI or Legacy Mode? UEFI
  • Are Secure Boot and Fast Boot in BIOS disabled? Secure Boot = Disabled, Fast Boot = Enabled
  • Is Windows still installed? If yes: Is Fast Start-Up in Windows disabled? NO, the entire drive was securely wiped to the point there was no partition before installing Zorin OS.

If you really think that Zorin-OS-18-Core-64-bit-r3 will encounter installer errors during setup because of Fast Boot being enabled, but for some under-the-hood reason Zorin-OS-18-Core-64-bit-r2 did not, then we may have our answer. Otherwise, I've been unsing Zorin-OS-18-Core-64-bit-r2 and it installed without a single problem and I've been using it again since posting here about this. I'd like to test things again but at this point don't have a day to throw out right now on doing this but may over the weekend if you really believe it's the Fast Boot setting. I've now turned off Fast Boot for the future and the current install of Zorin-OS-18-Core-64-bit-r2 seems unaffected.

Thanks.

Well, it would be worth a Try but You don't have to do it. When the r2 ISO works for You, You can use this.

This could be a Point, too: Etcher. It can make Issues ... but don't have to. If you would have a Windows Machine, I would recommend You Rufus and would tell You to use in Rufus on the ''Partition Sheme'' Option GPT for Your UEFI BIOS.

Ventoy would be another Option. There You can set that up in the Ventoy Settings, too. If You are in Linux, I can recommend Impression. It is available as Flatpak. I use that, too and it works fine for me.

Thanks for the thoughts and your time, I appreciate it! I think at this point I will wait for either, A) I need to reformat my computer for some other reason, B) Core 18 r4 or Core 19 is released, whichever comes first (A or B). I'll note to try "Impression" next time and experiment from several separate USB's with both BalenaEtcher and Impression being used. If this topic isn't closed by then I'll report back what happens. Thanks again.

When it is closed, You can ask to open it again. Then You can post Your Comment.

I've just noticed that when rebooting my system after turning Fastboot off in BIOS, I had really bad mouse freezing, to the point that it was difficult to navigate to reach the power reboot option. So, being in I.T. I know to think about what was last changed, in this instance Fastboot. So I reenabled Fastboot and now the mouse freezing is gone, if not barely perceptible. Just thought I'd mention it.

The BIOS Fastboot skips some loading in order to POST faster.
Having it off allows for full init, which seems to have revealed some buggy code for your mouse...
