Are trial versions of Zorin OS 18 Lite already available?
No, unfortunately there are no beta versions of Zorin 18 Lite available yet.
Can't be making me all excited when I get on here, all I'm waiting on is a new version of Lite. Build me up just to tear me down ![]()
My gut feeling is that they may cancel Lite ... hopefully I'm wrong. I did test drive the live version of Lite; it wasn't bad when I customized it to my liking. Too bad they're gonna kill it off soon.
Isn't Zorin Lite just XFCE with some customization?
You can apply the zorin themes to xfce/other desktops (someone has made that possible - I run zorin blue dark with budgie and it looks Phenomenal)
- although not having Zorin ship with XFCE definitely can complicate the process
All Zorin releases are based on Ubuntu so Zorin Lite is I suspect, xubuntu (ubuntu with xfce).
I'm having that same gut feeling, and I hope we are BOTH wrong!!! But just in case... I've got MXLinux waiting in the wings.
I just went to look at the Zorin pages on Lite and their sunset announcement for Lite. They still seem to claim that Zorin Core would run on 2 Gb RAM which I find hard to believe:
" * Thanks to recent optimizations to the standard desktop environment, the non-Lite editions of Zorin OS (Core, Pro, and Education) are able to provide a fast and resource-efficient computing experience on older computers. It’s now possible to run the non-Lite editions of Zorin OS on computers with as little as 2 GB of RAM and on machines as old as 15 years, with higher performance than the Lite edition in some tasks. I have a different gut feeling: That Zorin OS 18 Lite is in the works and will be released.
This is not optimism, merely pattern recognition. You can believe that they will release Zorin 18 Lite because they said that they would.
They also have developed and uploaded XFCE packages to the Noble repository.
I won't be surprised if this will be the messiest Zorin Lite edition
. But comparing how well XFCE as a standalone DE, I hope there won't be any major issues/annoyance.
And assuming, just like the previous release, there won't be either a beta or any announcement of release. I wish to be wrong on this one.
I do believe there will most certainly be a Zorin 18 Lite. That being said, I also believe due to the massive influx of new users, I'm wagering they're dealing with A LOT on the backend to make sure Core is in a stable state, what with newer Gnome and Wayland causing god knows how many issues for them.
Still, it would be nice to get some status update somewhere on how things were going or what they were focusing most on, and what's to come soon ish...
Yup. Not disagreeing with you there. Hopefully it's enough for them to consider going with Debian and possibly another DE (like XFCE or even Plasma) eventually.
100% correct. I wish they'd get this into their heads. Communication is KEY.
