Zorin OS 18 : Thunderbird by apt using Snap

Hello, i want to install Thunderbird with apt but it is installed with snap ! So my profile is not in the right folder. thunderbird/noble,now 2:1snap1-0ubuntu3 amd64 [installed]
Transitional package - thunderbird -> thunderbird snap

Why can i use the old way ?

I'm n ot on Zorin OS right now, so I can't check. Basically Zorin is build upon Ubuntu who want to force the users to use snap.
Maybe @AZorin can have a look at how Thunderbird package(s) is set up.

Hi and welcome.
First be sure to backup your thunderbird data. I am not sure how snap does this but a normal install will have it in a hidden file in /home .thunderbird. To view hidden files in your Home folder press Ctrl+ H.

Next, uninstall the snap package of Thunderbird. Open a Terminal and entter:

sudo snap remove thunderbird

Then remove the snap plugin to gnome-software:

Try this method of installation:

Yes, this is an Ubuntu Thing. With Ubuntu 24.04 (the Base of Zorin 18) Thunderbird comes only as Snap - like with Firefox in Ubuntu 22.04. It is the same Thing.

Your Options:

  1. Use the Flatpak:
    https://flathub.org/en/apps/org.mozilla.Thunderbird

  2. Download Thunderbird from the Website:
    https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/

  3. Add the mozillateam PPA from Ubuntu:
Firefox ESR and Thunderbird stable builds : “Mozilla Team” team

Don't remove the snap-plugin from gnome-software if you want to use snap-packages. When you remove it you will no longer be able to install snap packages.

As an Addition: ... in the Software Store. You could then theoretically install Snap's in the Terminal.

What frustrates me, is that I've install Thunderbird as Zorin OS package, but it is installed as snap. And I did not notice it until it strated to bug (freezing regurarly), and I checked if it is in the list of snap apps. Well, I guess, it is not the fault of Zorin devs, but sad and disappointing heritage of Ubuntu base.

After removing snap installed Thunderbird, I reinstalled it as Flatpak, and it is running much more stable.

Thanks !

Yes, I agree. But that comes from Ubuntu, not from Zorin.
