Will it be possible to use Xfce normally on Zorin OS 19, given that Zorin OS 18 will be the last version to include the Lite edition of the operating system? And if so, will it receive updates for a possible Zorin OS 19.1 or Zorin OS 20 even when running
Yes, you can install XFCE and the system point releases and updates will come through. Updates for XFCE will be supplied either by Ubuntu repos or if you add the XFCE Dev repo, if you wanted a higher version that what Ubuntu 26.04 offers.
However, it will not have Zorin OS support or Zorin OS Lite features.
Thank you for clarifying my doubts ![]()
I only use Zorin OS Lite, so... This is a hot topic for me. ![]()
Just curious about Ubuntu and snap being the long term replacement. Will this be across all Ubuntu derivatives like xubuntu, lubuntu, kubuntu?
Can you clarify what you are referring to?
Well someone posted on here that Ubuntu is only going to allow Snap packages for applications and wondered if this is why Zorin will be retiring Lite. So the knock-on effect for
Zorin 19 might be that you could not install xfce if Ubuntu on which Zorin is based won't have access to install clean xfce, and I suspect they would remove Synaptic. Additionally Gnome is dropping mutter with newer Gnome Shell in the future, so isn't it time for Zorin to look at a different GNU/Linux base?
Ah.
Separating rumor from fact:
Ubuntu is not going "Snap packages only."
What caused this rumor is that for the discussions about a proposed Immutable flavor of Ubuntu - which would exist in tandem with regular Ubuntu and its other flavors, Canonical would like that special edition to be Snap only.
However, regular Ubuntu and its flavors and derivatives remain unchanged.
Yes, I believe it is. However...
Gnome is not dropping Mutter.
They are dropping X11 from Mutter entirely.
Which would deeply affect Zorin OS especially since they decided to dump Lite.
And there have been talks, due to the above, of others forking Mutter.
Thanks for clearing that up.
Well, the Rumors come not from Nothing. I created here a Thread for this:
Don't understand me wrong: This is of Course not an official Announcement but it shows a Plan/Idea. Sure, Plans can change, now doubt. But it sounds no longer like a simple Rumor or a personal Opinion what will come.
There is another thread where you acknowledge exactly what I just said above:
Rumors are rumors - and accuracy is the goal.
A rumor that claims that Ubuntu is swtiching to immutable and snaps only is false and inaccurate. That is only a rumor.
Even if the cause of the rumor is that Canonical wants to introduce an additional flavor of Ubuntu - alongside the current, that is immutable and Snaps only.
But this comes from a Canonical Person: Jon Seager. To be fair: I didn't know if he is important enough but ''Vice President of Engineering'' doesn't sound like it is only a Mindgame from some random Person.
But as I wrote above: Plans can change.
What comes from Jon Seager?
Is Jon Seager claiming that Canonical intends for a Snaps Only Immutable Desktop to replace Ubuntu as the default download?
Yes or no.
This is mentioned in the linked Article. To quote that:
Mittel- bis langfristig wird das Standard-Ubuntu, das die Leute verwenden werden, ein Core Desktop sein.
Jon Seager, Vice President Engineering bei Canonical
Choose Your prefered Translator Tool to confirm that, but that means that in mid-term to long-term the Standard-Ubuntu will be Core. And Core is Snap-only and immutable.
But to be fair: A bit further stands:
Seager betont dabei, dass der klassische Desktop mit APT und Deb-Paketen parallel weiter existieren werde.
That means, that Seager said that the classic Desktop with APT and Deb will exists parallel. So, now it would be easy to say: Simply use it then. But when the Core Desktop will be the ''Main Thing'', how many Attention will the ''classic'' Desktop then still get?
So, as I wrote above: I wouldn't see that as an official Announcement, but it sounds like a Plan. And as I also wrote above: Plans can change - in certains Ways. Depending on Situations and Circumstances there is the Possibility that Things can Change.
But for now, I have to take it as it was said.
I take your meaning.
Hmm...
The blog post, which I did not need a translator for, does not state this one detail.
But I agree with your interpretation.
Seager does say, in your link, that the Immutable Snaps Only Ubuntu will become default with regular Ubuntu coexisting.
And...:
It is a way of quietly abandoning it.
This is a very poor choice of direction; based on obtaining the utmost control over the end user.
Well, I stand corrected on this - There is discrepancy here, but enough discrepancy to allow Canonical an "out".
That is my Concern. First, You put it at the Side, then maybe hide it behind a Link and later Canonical comes to the Conclusion that the ''Alternative'' isn't needed anymore and ends the Support.
But we will see how it will end - or not.
A bit like the Zorin OS Lite download link?
Well ... Yes, but Zorin at least made an official Announcement to take it down, hahaha!
