I use the latest zorin os (core) and I connected my Canon Pixma IP2600 which used to work with Windows 10. Zorin recognized it and installed gutenprint driver.
After the installation it showed the printer ready and connected but when I tried to print a test page it said that the page is printed although nothing happened on the printer
Hi, I recommend first that you install Synaptic Package Manger, or even from the terminal, to install:
sudo apt install printer-driver-all
but noticed that Zorin have recently included this, so it might be present already.
I was going to suggest official canon website but it appears they no longer provide support for that model, only for Windows!
The best way to get the Printer to install is to start at the command line in a terminal (Just enter the word terminal in menu search bar, then press enter):
sudo system-config-printer
Next, click on Add - if networked, use AppSocket/HPJetDirect method and enter the IP Address of the printer in the top field. Then click on continue to select driver, then choose the iP2000 series driver:
If it is a networked printer, you may also need to stop 'Printers' from autodetecting the printer again by following my guide in the Unofficial Manual for Zorin 17 Core here:
Only a suggestion or two. Go to Settings>Printers and check if there is a print queue. Delete any outstanding items. Then try printing a photocopy. If that works, restart the PC, and then try printing again. No guarantee, but I recall hastles with this printer years ago - now use HP Deskjet. I assume it is connected by USB cable?
Hi, I've explained in the unofficial manual that what happens is the kernel recognises the device but if you click on printer Properties it will state that it is 'driverless'. I was surprised that Canon no longer has a Linux driver (I am not specifying GNU/Linux, as Linux is the kernel that holds drivers for hardware components) for this printer. Canon (unlike HP) normally supplies Linux drivers for their devices and even provide drivers for 32-bit Linux kernels.
I have stated elsewhere, something I learned on the Pear OS forum is that the best method of installing a printer is by using the command:
sudo system-config-printer
I never bother going down the Settings | Printers route. Additionally before installing you need to stop autodiscovery, then disable autodiscovery before installing the printer whicj I covered in the unofficial manual.
Your image here is that of Zorin Core. The original image in the first post seems to be from Zorin Lite (I now use Zorin Lite exclusively. Years ago I bought Zorin 6 Ultimate mainly in order to get some help from the Zorin Team to get this model printer to work.)
To try and help, I have been searching Canon websites for a Linux driver for the Canon PIXMA iP2600.
All I have found so far are two 32bit Linux drivers. That is no use on Z17, so I will not paste a link here to that.
For 64bit Linux Canon reply "Unfortunately your device is no longer supported under the selected operating system." very strange, 32bit yes, 64bit no.
I have tried all solutions above but nothing seems to work. It is such a pity a device that used to work in windows 10 not to work in linux. Not even in windows 11. We are creating unnecessary waste of devices only because of a driver which could be a few programming lines for someone expert. Anyhow thank you all for your replies and intention to help. If any new idea comes, it will be more than welcome
The driver package that Canon made for this printer is quite old, but can be downloaded from here (which I found after using Brave A.I. search engine, and then used it's results to search for the driver - still not guarantees it will work as it may need dependencies of older libraries due to the age of the printer driver - this is a Canon issue, not a Zorin or any other GNU/Linux issue:
