I am looking to purchase Zoris OS 18 Pro, and am wondering it uses Wayland as its default window manager? I have used Wayland on Bazzite, using an Nvidia card and it works fine. But i don't like how the OS works. So i am looking to change?
Yes, Zorin 18 uses Wayland by default (but You can switch to Xorg, too). But keep in Mind: It uses Gnome 46 as Base. So, the Wayland Implementation isn't the same like on an up-to-date Desktop. So, it could be that You will have not the same good Experience.
As far as i tried it on a my Lenovo P53 Nvidia Quadro RTX 3000, Zorin was working fine. I mostly use Ubuntu 24.04 with Wayland as daily, and it works quite fine (Zorin is based on Ubuntu). Very few problems. Anyway, Zorin should also work fine on Xorg.
Regards
I have had issues with x11, as i have 3 screens at different screen resolutions. And refresh rates, and that didnt play very well with x11. You could tell that you set it to something, and just by the look you could tell it was not working.
The ZorinOS Upgrader tool should allow you to upgrade from Core to Pro. But the Upgrader tool for Z18 is not released just yet, so that may not be possible right away for Z18 Core to Pro, but should not be very long to wait.
Here is devs response to Upgrading Z16 Core to Pro when the Upgrader tool was being finalised. Will Direct upgrade be ready for Zorin OS 17? - #21 by AZorin
At the time i was running Bazzite, which uses Wayland. And it did solve the issue for me. But in the end i switched back to Windows 11. As apps where an issue.
I do understand the point about Zorin, but if you still have troubles and no other alternative with Zorin - this "style" could be set in other Gnome distributions. My actual Ubuntu 24.04 is almost set as Zorin.
If Wayland on Bazzite solved the issue of your screens, perhaps it will be the case in Zorin - I just will say to take time for reading feedback from community about Zorin 18 and Wayland.
