So today i tried Pop! OS 22.04 on my MSI Crosshair 15 B12UGSZ and i must say, i never have seen a live environment running that fast. All drivers are loaded on default. It's a matter of time before i ditch Windows 11 aside. The sounds are working better on linux then it does on Windows, much louder and no need of third party apps.
The time is ticking....i do miss Pop! OS alot....the switch will be made soon.
Why i am still using windows ? i just tried it for a year because it came preinstalled with this unit (windows 11) and i am getting sick of it every day.
Keep in Mind that Pop OS will get with 24.04 an own developed Desktop Environment called Cosmic. So, it will no longer have the Gnome Base like it now have. I only say it for the Case that You use Gnome Extensions.
I know, that's why i waited BUT they only have alpha build released on 8 august. I don't know how long it will takes before they have the final release on the market. But i am guessing it will take a year or 2.
Tested the alpha build on a 15 years old machine and it was running fine....can't say for windows on that exact same machine lol.
I'm also waiting for the release of their new desktop environment... I personally liked Pop!_OS quite a bit, only continued to recommend Zorin OS due to its familiar look and feel. But I've noticed that when people have the option to customize things they like to do that, and Gnome has been lagging behind on that front. Pop!_OS may be an excellent choice for beginners when it's finally out, we'll see.
iv'e tried pop OS before (ok years ago) after other distros , and ,to me ,it was just confusing .
i didn't like it lol
just saying , there's other distros out there that just looks better and is more customisable in my opinion
if my "machine" where any better ,i'd go for something like Ubuntu or Debian or KDE
guess it's all about preference
@Michel and @zenzen For me it was a toss of a coin between Zorin and Pop!_OS. I watched a lot of comparison and tutorial videos, and Zorin looked much better than Pop! for me. I'll keep an eye on the new release though... always interesting to see new things Linux.
@Ponce-De-Leon , I'm not sure I like Gnome... so could be a good thing. Now I know that Ventoy will allow me to play around more easily with different distros, I'm looking forward to playing around.
I started with Zorin OS 16 back in 2021, then i made the switch to Pop! OS 20.04, 20.10 and 22.04 releases. I loved it, till i got a msi notebook in march 2023. Windows 11 came preinstalled...i knew MSI has a terrible linux support, the internet is full of things people can't install linux thanks to their hardware. A few months ago i read a article from 2023 "MSI Laptops To Enjoy Better Linux Support Beginning With The 6.4 Kernel" .... so the Linux feeling came back to me again :). I hope Pop! OS 24.04 will ship fast, if not 22.04 will be installed on this machine anyway.
So far i did big upgrades on this notebook, upgraded the ram from 16GB to 64GB and i removed the 1GB nvme drive for 2x 4TB nvme drives (Samsung 990 Pro).
I can say that I like Gnome - Gnome with Extensions. Vanilla Gnome isn't my Thing. The Style is still the same but the limited Possibilities without Extensions would be a K.O. for me.
Funny the timing of this post, I just installed Pop!_OS on my laptop (newest, still have other with Zorin OS 17, primarily used by my mom) the thing that attracted me to Pop!_OS was at first the desktop, out of the box it's almost equal as how I customize Zorin to my liking (top bar, dock, tiling windows, etc.) and also because I hope big things of Cosmic, maybe in the future Zorin OS could bring support for this new Desktop Environment
Didn’t boot in windows for about 2 weeks now. On my older notebook windows is still installed but i will remove it from all our devices here (3 notebooks). My wife is getting mad about forced updates, she pressed no and Microsoft just pushed it through. Today on a 13 year old notebook i was transferring files to a external drive. For some reason Windows update just updated and restarted my older notebook without asking. I did a file transfer and it got interrupted by windows update . Like i did not had any choice. I had luck my files didn’t got corrupted.
