A couple of months ago I asked about an alternative to Hoo Net Meter, a Windows customisable graph which I run at the top of my screen showing up & down network traffic. Very useful.
I have got it running pretty well, but on every boot I have to restart it, reposition & resize it. I have the program .exe file on my desktop. Is there a way to autostart it?
Thanks...
Hi. I don't think there is, because you will be running it in WINE I suspect. This is bit like running a VM, because it is running inside its own environment, not part of Zorin.
Thank you. I suspected that would be the case. Thanks for confirming.
Hey David:
The next best thing might be to use Bottles instead of running Wine manually. I was reading about it, and It allows for a form of autostart. Apparently you can generate a desktop entry for any app in a "bottle" and add the bottle to Startup Applications. Not only that, but it claims to allow you to enable a "virtual desktop" forcing the app to stay within a window you choose every time it launches. Could be a time sink, or it could be a solution. I don't know. Hey Swarf, am I all wet?
Can you please right-click on the .exe file on your desktop and open it with a texteditor and then make a screenshot and post it here?
@Forpli Ah, no good. Binary garbage... ![]()
@wsmather - thanks for that suggestion. I'm already using Wine & Bottles, but I'll check out your suggestion.
You inspired me so I made a tool, it's not perfect but it work and it's for linux ![]()
Awesome! Naturally I'll struggle with installing it, since I'm still a point-and-click guy after a full six months, but I'll certainly be trying hard... ![]()
Thank you for this - amazing help for a simple question, and another step towards finalising my divorce from MS.
Still here if you need some help ![]()
Well, what a result! I'm not entirely sure how I managed it, to be honest, but I have your Netmeter running on my screen as I type. You know that you've just signed up for a stream of enhancement suggestions, right...?
Can I offer a suggestion? It's resizable down to a certain depth, and is still minimum 2cm deep. Is it possible to lose the title and make it vertically resizable to, say, 1cm? That would allow me to see the Firefox bookmark bar.
But that's a small thing. I'm amazed that you managed to create this so quickly. I'm sure that now it's out there people will enjoy the benefits of not having to wonder if their device is actually downloading or just frozen.
Thank you again so much - I really appreciate this.
could you please make your suggestion here, I will see what I can do
