Hello:
I have tried to install Diablo II Ressurrected through Lutris. However, when it starts to install Battle.net I get error BLZBNTTAGT00000854.
I have logged in to both Blizzard and Lutris support without getting a solution. Obviously the problem must be generated with some update, since until last week this situation did not occur.
Can anyone think of a possible solution?
Thank you very much.
Alexandros
Just doing a quick drive-by to put this in the gaming section. I don't have time to look into this right now, but hopefully someone can give you a bit of guidance in the mean time
This seems to affect many other titles, not just Diablo II:
It's fairly recent, clearly due to some update. I would think that Blizzard would release a new patch to fix this.
I'm not familiar with how Lutris and similar platforms work... but is it possible to rollback to the version prior? One thing that I like about owning my own games physically is that you can do this. When there's a bad update, just roll back by changing a file or two. It's a hacky way but it works.
Very unlikely. Battle.net forces updates, and for an online game, that's really necessary for clients and servers to stay in sync. I don't have Diablo 2 Resurrected, only the original from 2000, but Blizzard is very heavily slanted toward always online these days.
In a nutshell, Lutris is just a frontend for WINE/Proton that makes launching and in some cases installation simpler via community scripts.
From the thread I linked above, this proposed workaround seems to help:
It's a shame, the move towards online-only is detrimental to the customer. Blizzard today is not the same as it was 20 years ago...
Last I read, they had only one developer still left from those days, an art director. That said, I understand Chris Metzen came back, so maybe two. In any case, getting merged with Activision, with Kotick at the top, will do that to you. Online only has made Diablo 3 and 4 distinctly worse than they could have been.
ANYWAY, as to the OP's problem, Applecheeks' thread regarding use of ProtonUp-Qt may help them get the runners suggested in that workaround link.
Thank you all for your response.
As a curiosity my son installed it on Windows (he doesn't use Gnu Linux on his computer) and it took a while to install, at times it tended to stick, so, as said it is a problem generated by the platform.

It's kind of fun. In the early days of gaming on linux, you would constantly assume any issue was because you were running on Linux, and run around finding potential solutions.
Nowadays, its gotten so good, that whenever there's a problem in a game, my default is to assume there's probably something wrong with the game rather than something wrong with the OS.
How time flies.
Gaming on linux started to became good when steam started to develop proton. I re(started) my linux journey in 2021 and back then gaming already whas good on linux. In fact i whas very surprised how smooth those games ran.
It only gets better…
I couldn't agree more sir! Gaming has improved a lot on Linux. When I first started gaming on Linux, it was circa Zorin OS 9, and back then, we were installing games in Wine, as well as using what little support we had, in Steam. All of this pre-dated Proton.
Having said that, once Proton came out years later, it made me abandon Wine, cause its a PITA to use, even to this day, because what do I need it for? Proton usually works for most games. Its all about Linux compatibility.
Then when the Valve Steam Deck came out, suddenly now Linux is getting even more greater support. I bet you most folks that use the Steam Deck, don't even know its running on Linux, cause people tend to be clueless. But for those of us who pay attention, we know!
I think gaming only gets better from here folks. As the years go by, the support gets better. And now that I upgraded my gaming experience with a 4K monitor, the only way I can go from here, is UP!
Pure wine is useless indeed to todays standard for gaming.
For battle.net try proton 9-23
Hello:
I am still unable to solve the problem concerning Diablo II Resurrected.
I typed the error code that appears in the Lutris forum and, according to the participants, the problem is solved.
The alternatives provided in this forum are beyond my modest computer knowledge.
Would someone be so kind as to guide me in virtue of what is indicated there?
Thank you in advance for your understanding and patience.
Alexandros
Did you download Proton-GE 9-23 ?
Yes.
I was able to move forward as I was able to install Battle.net and Diablo II Ressurrected, not Diablo III and Diablo IV which gave me error.
At least I can play a game.
Thank you very much.
I'm testing another method of getting Diablo 3 and 4 working for you. I've used Bottles instead of Lutris to make it work in the past, so I'm making sure it still works, then I'll update you with results.
Success. Try this:
- Install Bottles from the software store in Zorin.
- Install ProtonUp-Qt from the software store in Zorin. (You may already have it from getting GE-Proton-23 for Lutris.)
- Launch Bottles and step through its first time screens.
- Close Bottles. This part matters! Don't do step 5 if Bottles is running.
- Use ProtonUp-Qt to install GE-Proton-9-23 for Bottles. You can select Bottles from the drop down menu at the top of ProtonUp-Qt.
- Start Bottles again.
- Click the + in the top left to create a new bottle, and name it Battle.Net. Choose Gaming when it asks what the bottle is for.
- If you new bottle didn't open automatically, click it to open it.
- In the Runner menu, select GE-Proton-9-23. Bottles will warn you that Proton is meant for Steam. Check the box that says "I got it," then click Use Proton in the top right.
- Back in the bottle's main window, click "Install Programs..." There's an automatic installer for Battle.Net that will make this much easier.
- When the installer finishes, if it launched Battle.Net for you, just log in and all should be good. If it didn't launch Battle.Net automatically, you should see it listed in the Bottle's main screen:
Click the triangle to launch Battle.Net. That's also how you launch it going forward, though the three dot menu provides some options for convenient shortcuts if you prefer.
Some notes:
- Logging into Battle.Net, you may notice that there are boxes to type, but some of the login screen is missing. This is normal. Just enter your username and password and hit enter.
- The game itself should run fine, but starting Battle.Net may look like it froze. Be patient. My computer is very fast, and I still have a delay here. Once the Battle.net client is properly loaded, it behaves very nicely.
- I tested Diablo 4, but not 3. I'm testing that now, and will update the post again at that time. Edit: Diablo 3 also confirmed working.
I thank you in advance for your suggestions and your concern for the subject, however, I am very much in denial with technology as my knowledge is very basic. I have tried before to implement the bottle system but I found it very complicated, sorry.
The problem I have is that the computer had a failure which forced me to format it, so I lost the work I had done.
I stated that I had managed to get Lutris to incorporate Proton-GE 9-23, however when I installed the programs again I have not been able to get Lutris to incorporate it.
Please, could someone tell me how to do it?
I have the Proton Up-Qt program, but in its listing does not appear this version of Proton-GE 9-23, which, I understand, is very recent.
Thank you very much.
Well, that's troublesome. You're right, somehow ProtonUp-QT doesn't list the newest version of Proton for Lutris. I've checked ProtonUp-QT and ProtonPlus both (both programs do the same thing), and neither has a version of Proton-GE newer than 8-26 for Lutris. That version is actually very out of date! I even tried copying Bottles' version of it into Lutris' runners folder, but it didn't work.
Would you be willing to try Heroic Launcher? It's similar to Lutris in that it tries to be friendly and easy to use, and Proton-GE 9-23 is available for it. If you're willing to attempt it, I'll see if I can get Heroic to run Battle.Net successfully for you. Probably not immediately though; it's very late here.
Thank you very much for your kindness.
Since I've basically written two guides to get Battle.Net working now, I made it a new thread with instructions for both. The Bottles method is honestly a little easier in my opinion, but it DOES work with Heroic, and if you set up Heroic, you can easily use it to play games from other services, like GOG.com and Epic Games Store. The guides are here:
