Is there a scheduled update that should fix that? It's OK if you say, yeah, there's one a month from now, scheduled for November XX. But I just need to know so that I can decide whether to go down a long and difficult Terminal path to get what I need.
An OS is pretty useless without this level of communication, especially for such a required feature if you still have Windows machines.
Haha. Good luck getting communication out of the Zorin Group about this. Some of us have been asking for better and more timely communication from them in general. Your post is the kind of thing I've tried to caution them about. Nothing. Sorry, though. My advice is to move on until they change their ways.
Move on to what? There are so many great features like the RDP out of the box and the folder structure being similar. Windows software working well and great alternatives suggested. They do a lot of good things to help Windows converts, it's just sad that Samba doesn't work in 18.
What @Omnimaxus means (correct me if I'm wrong here) is that the ZorinGroup, unfortunately, is not very proactive when it comes to communicate things like due dates; things like updates, bug fixes, etc.
There is some communication either via email, if you're subscribed to the newsletter or are a Pro customer, or here in the forums. But it has been noted by many users that these could be much more frequent.
It is unfortunate because some issues such as this one with the Samba server are very important to a lot of people. Especially those who are still testing the waters and are trying to move on slowly on some computers in their house or business.
For the time being, you can get it to work but by editing the configuration files directly instead of going through the GUI options. Here's one such thread where this was covered, although even this solution that I'm proposing and shown here doesn't seem to always work:
