Can't boot Zorin on a Mac after update

My old MacBook Air was no longer able to run MacOS, so I installed Zorin 18 as the only OS. It has been working well until I did an update and reboot.
On reboot I am getting the error message on a pink background:
KERNEL PANIC!
Please reboot your computer.
VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

I am not aware of any keys on a Mac to reboot, so I turn it off and on again. It keeps returning to the same error message.
Because there is only Zorin, I don't know if I have grub.
If I had access to a grub menu I could boot to a previous kernel, but I don't know how to get there.
Would booting with a Live USB help?

Grub menu will appear if you press and hold Shift during boot, if you boot using BIOS. When your system boots using UEFI, press Esc.
I hope this helps. Then select advanced options to boot from an older kernel.

This happened to me in the past and it was because I had installed specific drivers for the mac with dkms.
