Customising Icons on Zorin Desktop + File Types

Is it possible to replace folder icons in Gnome or KDE desktop,
as easily as replacing Windows folder icons with .ico files created in Photoshop?

Also..

What is the Linux equivalent an .ico file (?)
is it .svg (vector), .png (raster), or some other file extension?

i know some time ago when i was on ubuntu , i could change an icon to whatever pic i wanted .
Can't remember how though lol. I'll look into it when i have some time .
But yea , it certainly can be done on Linux.

That's a good starting point.

Yes. Therefore, You have to go to the Theme and there You have to look for a Folder called ''places'' and in there for ''folder.svg'' for the normal Standard Folder. Other Folders have other Names of Course. When You replace them take care of to name it the exact same Name as it has in this ''places'' Folder. Otherwise it wouldn't work.

Normally for Icons should be the .svg Files. I think, that You should find this mostly.

Perfect !

Sounds straightforward.
I reckon .svg files can be edited in Gimp.

Many thanks

The Folder Structures on the Themes can be different. So, You would maybe have to search a bit to find the right Folder. And I saw that in the Zorin Icons are a Mixture of .svg and .png Files. So, when You want to change there something, You have to take care of using the right File Format.

Exactly what I needed to know.
This information makes the task very clear now.

I expect the file names change depending on the desktop language.

I would recommend using Inkscape for .svg files instead of Gimp. With .svg files you get an icon which doesn't loosing quality or details despite how you scale it.

So Inkscape handles scaleable vector graphics (svg) better than Gimp? In the same way vector images are created in Illustrator, and not typically Photoshop.

The File Names not. There are English. You should find folder.svg or folder.png for Example wit that Name.

Yup. Precisely.

This still can be done if i am not wrong.

Aaah.. I get what you mean now. So this would be for customising the look of ALL folders. That's useful as well, however in this case I'm looking for the equivalent (in Windows) of dropping an .ico file into a folder -- then appying that .ico image to That folder alone. It's a piece of cake in Windows, but in Linux.. (???)

Bit by Bit I'm building up a Linux knowledge base
thanks to helpful tips like these.

Cheers!

Oh, You want change the Icon for one specific Folder, yes?

Exactly!

Can this be done in KDE or Gnome?

Yes, that is possible. You create a Folder. Then make a right-click on it and choose Properties. And then click on the Folder Icon (the red marked one):

Then you can take a Picture of Your Choice to use it. Here in the Example I changed it to this:

Das ist einfach

To make an Addition: I tested this Way with .jpeg, .png and .svg and it worked.

So Linux is more flexible with file types..
All icons in Windows are limited to .ico image files.

The .ico image format was created by Microsoft, so no surprises there
