Hello forum members, I have two Xeon E5 2690v2 computers with each 64GB DDR3 1866Mhz memory that ran ZorinOS Pro 17.3 fantastic combined to 1 computer on a Huananzhi X79 16D motherboard. Zorin OS was running in UEFI gpt modus on the NVMe I installed it, but the PC freezes about ten seconds after booting. A reinstall of Zorin OS also freezes a few seconds after clicking "Try or Install." and I only can shutdown by pushing 5 seconds the power button. De CPU, memory and chipset is the same as mij old computers so what could cause the freezing during install?
I tried alsof to install Zorin OS in MBR Legacy modus but get the same freezing.
Then, I know its the devils work, tried Windows 10 Pro and this works like charm on MBR Legacy modus, benchmarks and Windows runs propper so it isn't a faulty motherboard.
Another Option could be to use an older Kernel because Your Processor isn't the newest. And You could try it with switching to Xorg.
To do that, go to the Login Screen. There click on Your Profile so that the Passowrd Field appears. When it is appeared, You should see in the bottom right corner a Gear Icon. Click on it and choose the Option ''Zorin Desktop on Xorg'' and then log in.
Another Point could be Your Setup in Common. When I understand that right, You have one Mainboard with 2 CPU's and to each CPU the RAM. Maybe this Setup in this Form isn't supported.
I cant install Zorin OS nor in Legacy or UEFI modes while het freezes after a few seconds I clik on "Try or Install".
Zorin OS doesn't boot so I cant switch to Xorg.
While trying Windows 10 Pro de NVMe was formatted in MBR Legacy modus so Zorin OS is gone now, but I have tried booting in a older kernel and it only works if I choose safe graphics mode while my videocard is an AMD RX580.
Booting the older kernel with safe graphics mode isn't workable for me I need my videocard to preform 100%
The motherboard has no Secure boot mode only MBR, UEFi or both and fastboot is disabled.
While UEFI gpt modus wasn't working I also tried the older MBR modus that also freezes the pc. Then I tried Windows 10 wich works like charm on MBR modus.
Nvme wiped Zorin OS install started in safe graphics mode and is now installing as UEFI gpt mode, I'm curious if the system will boot after this.
Update:
When boot appears i use the left shift to get the extra boot options and choose the recovery mode because Zorin OS can only boot in this recovery mode it boots in Wayland and Xorg in this recovery mode.
When I open info I see an llvmpipe 256 bit as graphic adapter and not my AMD RX 580 even so I see only 64 GB of ram instead of 128 GB
Update has started and I installed de AMD Linux RX580 Graphic driver but after a restart the system still hangs directly after the boot unless I choose the recovery mode again.
Did you check the SHA256 checksum of the downloaded ZorinOS .iso before use?
Which tool did you use to create your bootable USB and did you select MBR or GPT option?
(EDIT: I am reading you tried both. But is the BIOS Legacy or UEFI?)
That could have bin an idee my friend but today I decided to return the motherboard to the sender.
After a long conversation with this Chinese seller and a lot of XXXXX advise from him I did choose te money back policy and my eyes are now on a Supermicro X9DR3-F a know Linux compatible server motherboard.
So Thank you all for the advise.
Cheers, De-Witte
Update:
BTW I did try Ubuntu 24.04 - 25.04
Linux Mint 22
Zorin OS 17.3 Pro
Windows 10 Pro
Only thing really good working was Windows 10 Pro after the necessary driver updates. But I'm done with Windows like the most of us here
