Elementary OS 8

My first try on elementary OS 8 was a bit of disaster, due to black screen. But this time (newer ISO), I got into eOS8 installed and up and running. It takes under 4 minutes to install it which is impressive and another minute to set up user account.
The first thing I see that's improved significantly is the app store. As for all eOS' apps are they specially made for the system and the app store is no exception.

It's fast and light weighted and runs Wayland by default, but can change to classics (xorg).
Another thing is that they have switched plank out with their own dock mostly because plank doesn't run in Wayland. Their dock can be themed via gtk4 .css files. Other than that, the dock is controlled via system settings.

Overall a nice desktop (way better than eOS7) with a lot of improvements to those who gives a rat about setting up the layout and just want to use a polish interface.

There's a flatpak called "Pantheon Tweak" which allow you to well yeah tweak your system, like changing icons, colors fonts etc.

I remember (from my childhood days  ) that ElementaryOS was painted as the macOS of Linux. Perhaps it was so back in the day. I tried the latest version as soon as it came out, and I ran out of there as far as I could.

Obligatory disclaimer to prevent offending someone: This is my personal opinion - but it was quite unpolished, slow, and frankly, ugly.

In my book there was only ever one decent MacOS lookalike GNU/Linux and that was David Tavares' PearOS. Gorgeous.

A new kid on the block tried (and failed) to resurrect it as an Arch based distro. It never installed, but looked beautiful in live mode. The first link appears to have been 'hijacked' by an advertiser that wasn't there previously.

The github page is where to download the failed last release:

Prior releases can be found on Internet Archive that appeared to work.

Funny that you mention it, I actually ran PearOS in an ultra low-powered laptop back in the day. Just dug up this picture from Facebook, from around 2013.

Look what I also found. I used to be a very active member in the local open source community back in the day.

Who knew I'd come back to Zorin OS in full force over 10 years later.... Life is strange!

SWARF!

I really like the first video, it appears to be showcasing a much more modern MAC OS alternative. The last MAC OS I tried was "X" AKA 10. I really like how Pear OS is doing 3D icons on the desktop.

I was also having fun watching Mario do his crazy dance on the desktop, what a neat little thing that is! You know whats funny? MAC's used to be known for the worlds most expensive computers. Now, they are known as the most affordable on the market. Crazy how times have changed.

Sadly no more. Tavares claimed he had been bought out, but speculation was that Apple closed him down. Mario was part of the Cairo-Dock App, sadly now pretty much abandoned. I suspect the X was the GeeMac 10. Tried that, wasn't impressed. When Pear OS folded a couple of guys intended to resurrect it to be called Clementine, but the devs of the media player objected, so it was going to be called Klementine. It too never took off.

Elementary OS 8 is horrible. I am with Zorin, yes, but out of curiosity, I tried Elementary OS 8 in a live setting (and in VirtualBox), and it was horrible. Many problems. They have truly lost their way. Over on Reddit, there are people who have posted about how bad it is, and so on. A shame.

Sorry to hear you had problems with it. I had zero problems and it went smooth.

Reddit people doesn't count, it's a troll factory with absolute wild wild west anarchy. Just saying before you get to attached to that place

Elementary feels so closed, i used it for a few months when it whas 0.3 freya. I had alot of issues compared to Zorin 9 back in those days. Their store felt so empty, not sure how it is now. But i would not go back to it because i had a bad taste from then.

It has everything now in store except for snap stuff now. It ask in the start if you want to enable flatpak.

I equate Reddit to the real world. Are there absolute trolls and people with no brains in the real world? Yes. Are there properly smart people with some of the best ideas ever in the real world? Also yes.

Some of the best advice I got -- both technical and general that is applicable to real-life scenarios -- came from people on Reddit.

Yes, it's known for trolls, but I wouldn't discount the entirety of it just because trolls exist there in the same way the real world isn't 100% full of terrible people.

True. But it wasn't a long back when we had people purring in from reddit because of bad advises they received from reddit and we had to save their skin.

Shame on you
On a serious note; Just don't follow something blindly when it comes to commands on that site. The're some mean people out there who wants to make a havoc on other people systems.
