almost always means that another Software Manager is holding the package lock.
Synaptic or Software Store or a terminal...
Check if any were left open.
Remember, when installing a package that installs to Root - the system must Lock in order to prevent cross-file corruption and for security.
Unfortunately I do this quite often when searching for an app to install mostly with Synaptic and the terminal .... as I will minimize one of them and open the other .....
Yes exactly what happened to me. Tried the software app from the taskbar and the later did a command in a terminal without closing the app.
Just checked and did the command at 44 were updated.. all good on that front.
