"Files" is not reponding. Zorin 18?

My "File" keeps coming up with this error. "File" is not responding. I have to kill the application, and use a third party File manager. Are there any known issues with Zorin 18 and the Native File Manager that I can fix, reinstall, or Logs to help troubleshoot. I'm an old noob so to speak. I setup Linux on a PC in 1994 because I didn't like Win311 and we used Unix at work. Been out of the game a long time, and could use a refresher for sure. That said, If you need logs or something else, I can follow along.

uname
Linux Aspire-VX5 6.17.0-14-generic #14~24.04.1-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Thu Jan 15 15:52:10 UTC 2 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

There are quite a few open threads on Nautilus File Manager crashing or not responding - have you browsed those threads to see if any match your experience?

Yes, I've found 2 Threads that don't help.. One suggested the X11/XOR option, which I already run. The other one the user reverted back to Zorin 17. And that does not help either. Thank-you.

try to remove folder-color, read this maybe it could help.

Welcome to the Forum!

Maybe a Reinstall could help. Type in Terminal:

sudo apt reinstall nautilus

You also could try it with switching to the older 6.14 Kernel and check if it behaves different.

For me, this only "fixes" the issue for a while. It's random but eventually files just stop responding.
Sometimes files don't even open after a system start.

I'm still wondering how in the hell Zorin 18 went live with a core feature being broken like this.

I know, right?!

About sharing the logs, I would recommend that you give Mint's System Information tool a try. It automatically logs the crash logs for users to review or share, and warns you about conflicts if any. I personally have found it helpful when something got crashed or conflict happened under my device.

Getting it working under Zorin has a little trouble but this guide shares simple easy steps to do get it working: Linux Mint's System Information Tool in Zorin 18

After going through the steps, restart your device. Launch file manager and when a freeze or crash happens, launch the System Information tool from menu and check both the Crash Report and System Report tab. There you can find the logs cleanly.

many other things you've installed may cause a nautilus crash, gnome extensions, another nautilus extension, pending update, kernel, etc...

Hi and welconme.

One plus point with Zorin 18 is you can install the most stable KDE Plasma 5.27.5 which uses Dolphin File Manager, not Nautilus (Files).

You mean the Reinstall?

But for Dolphin it wouldn't be neccessary to install the whole Plasma Desktop. Dolphin can be installed seperately.

True, but I feel Plasma is a better experience than Gnome.

I missed this question when it was originally posted. People have recommended possible fixes for Nautilus, but nobody has suggested trying an alternative. I tried quite a number of file managers, including Nautilus & Dolphin, but the only one that I found satisfactory is Nemo - permanent split screen (if desired), simple file renaming & copying/moving... I'm betting that you would like it.

But here it is about the File Manager and not the whole Desktop (where I'm not the biggest Fan of Plasma).

There is also Krusader and you don't need Plasma, just Synaptic Package Manager as it is no longer available in Software.

Yep.
Reinstalling it will fix it for a while. But after some time I try to open files and it will be broken again.

I do understand that, but the only extension I have installed is a Dualshock/Dualsense Battery Percentage. The rest is all the stock Zorin stuff that already exists.

Zorin 17 was pretty much stable, never had a single issue and I had far more extensions installed there. For me the worst is that trying to reinstall Nautilus is not fixing anything, it just temporary, and it's kind of annoying, I'm not gonna lie.

Do You have in Nautilus any Google Drive, Nextcloud or NAS/Server bound in?

I have my regular Google account logged in, but I never use it, so if you tell me I should remove it, I'll do it in a heartbeat.
