First time switching to Linux from windows. Wanted to ensure the hardware compatibility before switching

Hi guys
I am just planning to switch to zorin os I tried it on the vm and I loved it but before switching to it completely I wanted to ensure that my hardware is compatible with zorin os or not
So I need your help with it

My system hardware details :-

  1. Hp elitebook 745g6
  2. Ryzen 5 pro 3500u
  3. Radeon Vega 8
  4. Synaptics VFS7552 Touch Fingerprint Sensor
  5. 16gb of ddr4
  6. 256gb ssd (I don't remember the specific brand)

Is everything is good to go?

The best thing to do is to create a Zorin USB boot stick, boot from it, and then select "Try Zorin." Then you can see if everything works on your notebook and if the drivers are recognized. This does not give you 100% certainty that it will be the same after installation, but it will give you a rough idea.

The graphics drivers should work as they are included in the kernel but maybe the fingerprint won't work:

This is a page that is specially for hp fingerprint synaptics driver g6 and shows the experiences with this device in linux.
On page 2 your notebook is listed but failed on all mentioned linux distributions until kernel 6.12:

Zorin 18 Beta has kernel 6.14 but remember it is Beta and not the final version and they recommend that you do not use on a daily driver machine. It should not be too much longer before a final release is produced. It might coincide with 14 th October when Microsoft pull the plug o. Windows 10.

Is it worth sacrificing the fingerprint sensor for switching to Zorin? Like I am a software developer student and I have been planning for a long time to switch.

So should I wait till the end of October before switching?

If the fingerprint reader isn't an issue for you then go ahead, go for it, but follow @Forpli 's advice to select 'Try Zorin' in live mode before installing to make sure everything else works as it should.

Okay, thank you very much for that

Seriously I can't believe the Linux hai such a good and supportive community...

If intended as your main OS, you could always install Z17.3 and then add a later linux kernel if needed for your fingerprint sensor.
If you are just experimenting, you could try Z18 beta and see how it goes. It should not be too buggy. It will eventually upgrade itself to Z18 Core production version when Z18 is public released.

Radeon Vega 8 works, I'm running that. R5 3500U is likely to work well, too. Your RAM is more than enough.

I suspect, the fingerprint sensor won't work without extra efforts.

Welcome to the Forum!

The Specs looks fine for me. That should work. Don't forget to disable Secure Boot and Fast Boot in BIOS. And Fast Start-Up in Windows if you plan to create a Dual-Boot system.

Like Other's here, I would have Concerns about the Fingerprint Sensor.

The Question here is: do You need/use it?

No I am planning for complete switch

Then, only check if Secure Boot and Fast boot in BIOS are disabled. This will avoid Issues.
