Getting Zorin OS to boot Surface linux kernel by default

Hi,

I installed Zorin OS on my Surface Pro 7, and then the Surface Linux kernel.

I followed the instructions on the latter and it installed without a hitch. However, when I boot up it defaults to the generic Linux 7.0.0-38-generic kernel.

I can access the Surface kernel by ESC the bootloader and choosing 'Advanced Options for Zorin OS' and then choosing the third option: 'Zorin OS, with Linux 6.19.8-surface-3'. This boots up perfectly at this point and I can use the Surface as a touch tablet. But when I restart it goes back to the generic kernel.

I have tried updating GRUB via 'sudo nano /etc/default/grub' and setting the GRUB_DEFAULT=1>2 (and the 'sudo update-grub') - which should correspond to the Surface kernel . While - as it boots - it looks like it's loading the Surface kernel, it boots into the default kernel.

Any help to force the machine to boot into the Surface kernel as default all the time would be greatly appreciated. I've run out of ideas with my limited Linux knowledge.

Boot via advanced options for Zorin with the surface kernel, check if it is running and then edit /etc/default/grub as shown here and update grub afterwards:

After surface kernel updates, go again to advanced options to select the latest surface kernel.
