The above is @Nourpon's simple solution to Ubuntu's misaligned linux-firmware package affecting AMD GPU users.
I have an Intel I7 does that fix apply and its quite complex to run
it's about GPU not about CPU, you have an AMD GPU
It mentioned Ryzen 7
your post
so you have AMD 7500 GPU or not ?
Apologies I've and AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT
don't apology, I was just lost ![]()
So this fix could concern you
After spending the better of 3 days with the help of a gemini Chat bot finally came to the conclusion to reinstall the system files reformat the / partition, I have a 1tb NVME drive installed and partitioned in 2 so my home partition was on the nvme0n1p2 which saved me having to reformat, to cut the long story short I am now back in business using 7.0.0-31 kernel.
Now I don't if that is the correct kernel to use the amd Radeon RX 6500 XT seems to be ok not sure for how long any suggestions would be welcome
I do have another issue though with printing and I'll log another case for that
The problem is not the kernel ! but linux-firmware, so if you don't encounter black screen again you are lucky
Yep saw that this morning. didnt see much change after reboot tho
Yeah, for now I will test few days before I'm sure it work and like that people who "hold" linux-firmware to stay in 2.26 will know they can install the full linux-firmware spltited version
After updating and this since few days, I can say you can upgrade, to do it you just have to unhold linux-firmware package and launch an upgrade:
sudo apt-mark unhold linux-firmware
apt-mark showhold #you shouldn't see linux-firmware in the list anymore
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
apt-cache policy linux-firmware-amd-graphics
You should see this at the end
linux-firmware-amd-graphics:
