I am trying to transfer some edited photos from my laptop back to the iPhone which I used to take the photos in the first place. I always transfer them off the phone for editing and I have a phone app called Photo Manager where I can put photos back in named folders and sub-folders if I want to show them to people. With Windows I was able to transfer photos both ways between the 2 devices using this app, but cannot find a way to do this now. Using Files on Zorin, the transfer doesn't work because the phone won't recognise the file format (jpg) - photos are stored in the iPhone Photos app in HEIC format. In Photo Manger they are in jpg format.
I would install KDE Connect from the App Store and install KDE Connect with Synaptic Package Manager. If you have the firewall enabled, use the ready made rule in GUFW.

Not sure about an iPhone but I use a Speed/Data cable to move stuff to and from my Android phone seems to work really well for me ..... not sure if an app is involved as I use Mint OS and I have never installed an additional app to do this .... by using your USB port on your computer it makes your phone a external drive so to speak ....
Some people claim you can just use your phone charging cable but I never could get that to work properly ....
With the Speed/Data cable I just transferred 143 photos from my phone to my laptop a few days ago .... I can transfer all the contents of my SD card to my laptop photos .... folders etc .....

To use the power cable (USB-A to USB-C), when you make the connection you have to swipe down to change the USB function from charging to file transfer.

Yup a very important step otherwise it will just sit there looking at you until it finishes charging your laptop ..... LOL

OK - been pretty busy lately so I'm sorry for ignoring your replies, everyone! I have no problem connecting the iPhone to the computer with the cable, and it has mounted OK. I can transfer the photos from the phone to the laptop, but not the other way around. I have used LocalSend successfully but it intermittently (and permanently for now) won't connect for some reason. I really don't like wireless connections as they seem to be rather unreliable - cables do work best! Swarfendor - I am going to try your suggestion but don't understand your jargon unfortunately! I'm still not yet at the joined-up-writing stage with Zorin... I found some stuff today online about KDE connect, however. I shall try again with LocalSend which, when working, works very well. Anyway, thanks guys for all your suggestions. When I'm successful I'll let you know!

KDE Connect won't connect. Neither device recognises the other. LocalSend won't connect. Zilch. Both devices on same wi-fi network. I despair of this wireless stuff.

You can use VLC on your mobile, this way you can enter to the url that it shares and drop your images from pc to there.

Thank you. Been trying that. It takes ages and nearly all the photos were marked "fail." Tried reducing the size, same thing.
Did you remove Zorin Connect off your phone? If you left it on it will clash with Zorin Connect.
In cases you didn't have a cable handy or a special app to do it, you can also just upload them to google drive, and then download them to the other device.
Now I've got my Windows VM set up (well, almost), I shall revert to using the excellent Media Transfer App on there. I hate to say it, but there are some things (a few!!) that Windows does better than Linux... (don't chuck me off this forum for heresy, guys!).

Yes. I believe some cords will only charge and some slightly more expensive ones do data transfer as well.

PROBLEM SOLVED - AND IT'S SUPER EASY!
Update - been really busy lately and haven't been able to tackle this problem. I now have an excellent solution that works, with the USB cable.
For any iPhone user, you are probably aware how clunky and awful the photo app is. You can't really sort the photos or name them etc. The Linux computer won't recognise it without a lot of jiggery-pokery (most of which I don't understand anyway).
Some time ago I downloaded an app on the iPhone called "Photo Manager." This enables you to create folders and sub-folders, name them, name and number your photos and move the photos where you want within the app. I have found this very user-friendly and useful and in my Windows days, had no problems transferring my edited photos back onto the phone from the laptop using Media Transfer App, but unfortunately this app doesn't work with Linux.
Easy-peasy lemon-squeezy way to transfer photos from Linux laptop to iPhone:
(You need the Photo Manager app installed on the iPhone.)
- Connect phone to laptop with USB cable.
- Open the source of the photos you want to transfer, from the file manager on laptop, e.g. "Pictures," or perhaps an external hard drive.
- Select the photo(s) you want to transfer.
- Right-click and select "Copy to."
- Select destination, i.e. "Documents on [name of iPhone].
- Scroll down and select "Photo Manager" from the list of apps. You can double-click on it to view the folders in it, and select a folder or subfolder, or create and name a new folder.
- Click the "select" button at top-right of the screen and the photo(s) will be transferred over.
- On iPhone, open the Photo Manager app and navigate to the destination folder you chose, and the photos will be there.
I have spent many frustrating hours trying to get my photos onto the phone from the computer and am delighted to have found such an easy fail-safe solution. Wireless methods are a total pain because of the unreliability of connection between the devices. This method works. It works a treat.
Just thought I'd share this in case anyone else is struggling with this frustrating problem. Apple don't make things easy!

Quick note here - after setting up my Windows VM, the dratted Media Transfer App won't connect with my phone. I contacted Digiarty and they said they'd look into it but haven't got back to me. See my other reply today with my eventual solution to the problem of transferring photos from Linux laptop back to the iPhone.
