How to switch between DE in virtualbox Zorin

Mint manages packages with its own method; including the MintSources package management system. It is tricky... and was developed for use only on Mint.

I would not try installing Mints P.M., because it likely would cause a lot of breakage.

Do you think that the Mint developers made the changes to the original gnome-software store with additional changes to the code and not only by changing the settings?

Well, Mint uses a MintSources package, which is installed on the OS, in Root. It preempts, some sources, separate from /etc/apt/sources and is a binary. You cannot adjust it.
It is tied to Mint's latest repository - so you can see how it would download and install incompatible versions of packages for Zorin OS 17.

That doesn't sound good... and probably not worth a try when it breaks the system. So Mint softwaremanager isn't just a software app that can be downloaded from older repo and used with the own sources of Zorin?

Not that I know of, due to that additional packaging. Mintsources is deeply integrated with Mint’s system configuration, especially with how it manages PPAs, mirrors, and update policies.
Technically, they can be installed. But I would not risk it.

I have done it in the past and it was constant headaches. And removing it - was also a large headache. It won't remove the MintSources by using apt remove...

Today I finally managed to get the layouts for Zorin Appearance in my VM in gnome. There was always shown no layout, although all other sections of Zorin Appearance were displayed. Installing and reinstalling Zorin Appearance never helped. Today I tried reinstalling zorin-os-desktop and it worked
I must have forgotten to follow your advice, @Aravisian. I had only reinstalled zorin-os-lite-desktop in zorin-lite-session and not the desktop in zorin-core-session.

I have a question to my VM Zorin light with core desktop, running gnome:
When I click on the forth layout in Zorin Appearance no dock appears and in extension manager there is no system extension shown that is called Zorin dock or Zorin dash, only Zorin Taskbar. I installed dash to dock, then I got a dock. But shouldn't there be one from Zorin? How to install? What is the name? When I search for Zorin Dash in Browse at extension manager, there is shown "not supported".

The 4th Layout show the default Gnome Layout. The Dock what You see is in the Overview - and this Ovierview shows the Layout Picture. So, when You want a Dock on the Desktop, You have to use Dash To Dock.

I'm not sure about the Zorin own Dock, but maybe this only works in Xorg. You can install it with sudo apt install gnome-shell-extension-zorin-dash

Thank you for your advice! I will try this out tomorrow. I was just confused because I thought something was missing from my installation (I've always had problems with Zorin Appearance Layouts on this VM). I assumed that you automatically get a dock when you select this layout.

Going back to the title of this thread, it should (I would have thought) replicate a bare metal install. What I mean is, when you add a different DE, it gets added to the options list of the cog at login time.

@Ponce-De-Leon I have installed Zorin dash and the extension works. At first glance, I can't see any difference to dash to dock.

It is at the end a Zorin configured Version of Dash To Dock. What You use, is up to You. You could compare the Settings if there is something different or if You miss an Option.
