How to Upgrade from Zorin OS 17 to Zorin OS 18 (Official Test Upgrade Path)

The Zorin Team has opened the official test upgrade path from Zorin OS 17 → Zorin OS 18 for Core, Education and Pro editions. This post walks you through the upgrade process safely and simply, while keeping your files, apps, and settings intact.

This upgrade method is in-place — meaning you don’t need a fresh installation. However, because it’s still in testing, there are a few precautions to follow.

1. Backup Your Data

Before doing any major OS upgrade, make sure you have a backup of your important files. Even though the upgrade keeps everything, a backup ensures safety in case of unexpected issues.

2. Install All Updates on Zorin OS 17

Open Software Updater and apply all available updates.
If the system asks for a restart, restart before proceeding.

This ensures Zorin OS 17 is in a fully updated and stable state before you begin the upgrade.

3. Enable the Test Upgrade Option

Since the upgrade path is still in testing, Zorin requires enabling a flag that reveals the upgrade tool.

Run the following command:

gsettings set com.zorin.desktop.upgrader show-test-upgrades true

Once done, you’ll see the upgrade option appear.

4. Launch the Upgrade Tool

Open:

Zorin Menu → System Tools → Upgrade Zorin OS

The tool will scan your system and show the option to upgrade to Zorin OS 18.

Click Upgrade, and the tool will begin downloading and installing all required packages.
This process may take some time depending on your connection speed.

5. Restart and Verify

After the upgrade completes, you’ll be prompted to restart.

Once you boot into Zorin OS 18, take a moment to confirm:

  • Your files are intact
  • Installed apps are working normally
  • Your desktop layout and settings look correct

For most users, the transition is smooth. If you use third-party repositories or did heavy system tweaks, you may need to address small adjustments afterward.

Important Notes

  • This is a test upgrade path, not yet recommended for mission-critical systems.
  • Always keep a backup before upgrading.
  • The upgrade tool is currently available for Core, Education, and Pro editions.
  • If you encounter issues, share logs and details on the forum so others can help.

If you’ve been waiting to jump to Zorin OS 18 without reinstalling, this is the official way to do it. Happy upgrading! @TechSolutionZ

Maybe You should add a Point to disable/remove any Third-Party Repo's to avoid Issues during the Upgrade Process and to add them after the Upgrade for the new Base again.
